LARAMIE, Wyo. (March. 7, 2023) – Following a weather cancelation in their last tournament, the Wyoming Cowgirl golf squad is back in action this week as they head to St. George, Utah to compete in the SUU Pizza Hut Lady Thunderbird Invitational hosted by Southern Utah at the Sunbrook Golf Club.
"St. George has always been a special place for the program over the years and the team knows the style of play needed to be competitive." Head Women's Golf Coach
Josey Stender said, "Even though the weather robbed us of our last event, the team was playing well and focused the second day. We will continue to build off the because this course will demand thoughtful play."
The Cowgirls will look to keep their momentum rolling after putting together a strong start at the Causeway Invitational before the event was cancelled. Last time out it was
Meghan Vogt who led the way for Wyoming sitting in the top 25 after the first round of play.
Jadan Gonzalez will also be looking to turn in another strong performance following her showing at the Mountain Classic Match play where she went 2-1.
The trio of
Morgan Ryan,
Samantha Hui and
Sophie Spiva will join Vogt and Gonzlaez in the Cowgirl lineup.
Grace Dunkleberger and
Rachel Stoinski will also be in action competing as individuals.
After battling the elements and being unable to complete play at their last tournament, the Cowgirls are set to make their return to play against a field that offers many familiar foes.
Of the 13 opposing teams set to compete at the SUU Pizza Hut Lady Thunderbird Invitational, the Cowgirls have faced 11 of them in a previous tournament this season including a select number of teams that have competed against the Cowgirls multiple times this season.
Among the field of competitors will be Mountain West foe Boise State who won the UVU Hobble Creek Fall Classic this season as well as finishing third at the mountain classic match play. Another team to watch heading into the weekend will be Weber State, who has put together a very good year so far winning the Eagle Invitational as well as recording three top three team finishes so far this season.
The first round of play is set to tee off on Thursday at 9 a.m. with rounds two and three to be played on Friday and Saturday respectively.
