LOGAN, Utah (10/1/23) – For the second consecutive game, the University of Wyoming soccer team dug itself a hole of which it couldn't dig out. Utah State held on for a 2-1 victory over the Cowgirls on Sunday at Chuck and Gloria Bell Field.
The loss drops Wyoming to 4-5-3 on the season and 0-4-0 (0 points) in Mountain West Conference play. The win propels the Aggies to 6-6-1 on the year and 3-1-0 (9 points) in league action.
Michaela Clark accounted for the Cowgirls' score with her first-career goal. She fired one in from outside the box that cut their deficit in half, 2-1, during the 36th minute.
Kiley Ballek and
Lily Brongo were credited with assists.
Utah State built its lead first with a score from Kylie Olsen, off a feed from Tess Werts and Bizz Arevalo, in the 11th minute. The Aggies doubled their advantage off a penalty kick from Kaylie Chambers in the 32nd minute.
Utah State led in shots, 22-7, and in shots on target, 6-4. Seven different players recorded a shot for Wyoming.
Miyuki Schoyen received her second consecutive start in net for the Cowgirls. She made four saves, while Utah State goalkeeper, Diera Walton, turned away three shots.
Wyoming remains on the road next week. The Cowgirls travel to San Jose State on Thursday for an 8 p.m. contest before going to Fresno State on Sunday.
