LARAMIE, Wyo. (April 25, 2022) – The Wyoming Cowgirl tennis team opens Mountain West Tournament play Wednesday, April 27 in a 1 p.m., MT matchup with the No. 11 seed Utah State. UW is the sixth seed.
The Cowgirls (11-12, 5-5 MW) closed the regular season with a 4-1 victory over Nevada last Friday in Fort Collins, Colo. Wyoming won the doubles point in the match, thanks to victories at the No. 1 and 3 spots. The team of Ida Krause and Maria Oreshkina won 6-4 at the first position while Mihaela Kaftanova and Lucia Malinak picked up a 6-3 win at No. 3.
In singles play, UW got a trio of straight-set wins. Oreshkina won 7-6, 6-3 at No. 1, Malinak picked up a 6-2 and 7-6 win at the third position, while Kaftanova closed her perfect 2-0 week with a 6-2, 7-5 win at the sixth spot. With her win in Friday's match, Oreshkina is now tied for the team lead, along with Sophie Zehender, with 11 dual victories this spring. Oreshkina also improved to 5-2 in Mountain West play.
UW defeated Utah State 4-1 during the regular season in Laramie April 15. The Aggies went 6-13 overall this spring and went 1-9 in league play. The winner of Wednesday's contest will face No. 3 San Diego State in the quarterfinals at 2 p.m., Thursday.
Wyoming is 8-8 all-time at the Mountain West Tournament under Head Coach Dean Clower. Prior to Clower's arrival, UW was 4-20 in MW Tournament matches.
