San Diego, Calif. (March 7, 2022) -- Playing in one of the top tournament fields in the country this week at the Lamkin San Diego Classic, the Wyoming Cowboys find themselves in a group of teams all within four strokes of each other entering Tuesday's final round.
Wyoming is tied for 14th with tournament host and fellow Mountain West Conference member San Diego State. Both teams shot a 581 (+5) total through the first two rounds played on Monday. The Cowboys and Aztecs are only four strokes back of 11th place Sam Houston State, 577 (+1); two strokes behind 12th place Loyola Marymount, 579 (+3), and only one stroke back of 13th place Colorado ,580 (+4).
"We're in a group of five teams who are closely packed together, and we have an opportunity to move up tomorrow with a solid round," said
Joe Jensen, UW Director of Golf and Head Men's Golf Coach. "Jimmy (Dales) had a nice round going and then suffered three bogeys on the back nine, but he is still in a nice position at one under par.
"Playing back-to-back tournaments like this is a challenge, but we just have to have guys step up and overall I like the way the guys are competing. There are three guys, in Pat (Azevedo), Kirby (Coe-Kirkham) and Tyler (Severin), who are all within two strokes of each other and will have a chance to improve their position tomorrow in the final round. We are missing one of our key players, with Bryce (Waters) having to pull out of the tournament due to not feeling well, but I'm pleased with how our team continues to play hard in a very good field of teams."
The Lamkin San Diego Classic features two Top 25 ranked teams in No. 8 Washington and No. 15 Notre Dame. A total of 14 teams in the 16-team field are ranked among the Top 100 teams in the country among 300 men's Division I golf programs.
Leading the tournament entering Tuesday's final round will be No. 34 ranked LSU. The Tigers hold a 15-stroke lead over second place Notre Dame. LSU posted a 36-under par total of 540, while Notre Dame shot a 555 (-21) total. Individually, LSU has four of its team members in the top five entering the final 18-holes led by Nicholas Arcement in first place at 133 (-11), Tiger teammates Garrett Barber and Michael Sanders are tied for second at 136 (-8) and a fourth Tiger, Cohen Trolio, is in fifth at 137 (-7). Notre Dame's Palmer Jackson, who is also tied for second at 136 (-8), is the only non-Tiger in the top five.
