Wyoming Track & Field Readies for Spank Blasing Invite

LARAMIE, Wyo. - The Wyoming Track and Field squad is set for their outdoor season opener this weekend as the Cowboy and Cowgirls will head to Pueblo, Colorado for the Spank Blasing Invite hosted by CSU- Pueblo. 

Wyoming will be looking for a repeat of their performance at the Spank Blasing Invite from a year ago which saw Wyoming athletes win five events and set ten new all-time top- 10 performances.

Long jump will be one of the highlight events of the meet for both the men and women with the duo of Shayla Howell and Kareem Mersal set to get their outdoor seasons underway. Howell is coming off of a trip to the NCAA Indoor Championships where she finished as a Second Team All American now holding All-American Honors in both Indoor and Outdoor competition. Mersal also finished his season strong winning the MW Indoor Title in the Long Jump. 

For the Cowboy and Cowgirl throwers, it will be their second competition of the outdoor season after competing in the Jerry Quiller Classic a week ago. The Cowgirls got off to a hot start with Mary Carbee winning the hammer throw while Cosette Stellern picked up a first-place finish in the discus.

The men also had a solid outing with the duo of Nathan Reid and Mikey DeRock finish second and third respectively in the discus. 

Competition will get underway on Friday evening withe men's and women's Javelin and Hammer Throw both set to begin at 2 p.m. MT. All other events will be held on Saturday with the action beginning at 8:00 a.m. MT.
