Detroit, Mich. (March 18, 2022) – Stephen Buchanan claimed another piece of history on Friday inside the Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan becoming just the fourth two time All-American in program history. He also becomes the eighth Poke in program history to earn multiple NCAA All-American honors.

"These guys all wrestled their best here at the tournament, I tell my guys any time they go out there and leave it all on the mat they need to hold their heads high and have nothing to be ashamed of. I am very proud of them and the way they wrestled" Head Wrestling Coach Mark Branch said.

No. 2 Buchanan cemented his All-American status in the quarterfinals where he went up against No. 7 Rocky Elam (Mizz), it was the second time this season the grapplers have faced with Buchanan taking their first meeting earlier in the season. It was a repeat performance from Buchanan who notched an early takedown and racked up over three minutes of riding time cruising to a 4-0 win and advancing to the semifinals.

After dropping a hard-fought semifinal match to No. 6 Jacob Warner (IOWA), Buchanan will wrap up his NCAA tournament tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. MT as he competes in the consolation bracket with a chance to wrestle back for third place.

"Obviously we are heartbroken with Stephen, but he has nothing to be ashamed of." Branch said "His loss hurts and stings but he still has a lot of good things he can do tomorrow so we just need to keep his head up and he should be proud of how he represents our university."

At 174 pounds, No. 20 Hayden Hastings started his day with two straight bonus point wins in his quest for All-American Honors. Hastings opened the day by pinning No. 19 Thomas Fritz (APP) in the first period. He then followed that up with a dominant 10-0 shutout over No. 22 Mason Kauffman (NIU) to earn a spot in the blood round.

In the blood round matchup Hastings faced No. 9 Mikey Labriola (NEB). Hastings put together a scrappy performance against his top ten opponent, but came up short 2-5 ending his impressive run just shy of All-American Honors. For Hastings, his 3-2 record marks his best career performance at the NCAA Tournament.

As a team, Wyoming finished the second day competition in 24th with 16.5 points sitting just ahead of Penn and just behind Pittsburgh. Penn State currently leads the team race with 108.0 points
