LARAMIE, Wyo. (March 1, 2022) – The Wyoming Cowgirl tennis team closes its non-conference slate with its second consecutive home match as UW welcomes Northern Arizona to Laramie for a 5 p.m., contest March 3.
The Cowgirls (5-6) are coming off a 7-0 win over MSU Denver February 20. Wyoming secured the doubles point against the Roadrunners and then followed that up with five straight-set victories in singles play. Lucia Malinak began with a quick 6-2, 6-1 win at the No. 4 spot to put the Cowgirls out front 2-0 in the match. That was followed by wins at No. 1 and No. 2 by Sophie Zehender and Maria Oreshkina, respectively. Zehender also took care of business 6-2 and 6-1 while Oreshkina was victorious 6-3, 6-1.
At No. 3 singles, Ana Fernandez was able to come out on top in the third-set tiebreaker, winning the match 6-1, 4-6 and 1-0 (10-7). Following Fernandez's win, Ida Krause was impressive at the fifth singles spot, winning easily 6-1 and 6-0. Rounding things out on the day was Mihaela Kaftanova at the sixth position as she won 6-4, 6-2.
UW is 2-0 in home matches this season and has won six consecutive home matches dating back to last season, where it went a perfect 4-0 in Laramie. The Cowgirls have been tremendous at home under Head Coach Dean Clower, posting a 47-7 record, which is an 87-percent winning percentage.
Northern Arizona enters Thursday with a 1-5 mark but three of contests have come against Pac-12 opponents, including nationally-ranked Utah. The Lumberjacks have played a pair of Mountain West opponents as well, winning at New Mexico 5-2 and losing against defending conference champion San Jose State, 4-3. Last season, NAU defeated the Cowgirls 5-2 in Flagstaff.
