ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of Wyoming Track & Field teams kicked off the Mountain West Indoor Championships on Thursday competing in the distance medley relay and the heptathlon.
Sage Coventry and Bryson Engebretsen got the meet and the day started with the first four events of the heptathlon. In the 60M Coventry ran to a sixth-place finish with a time of 7.31 while Engebretsen finished eighth with a time of 7.44
Coventry continued his strong start finishing fourth in the long jump going 22-4.25 while Engebretsen finished tenth with a leap of 20-7. The duo of Cowboys mirrored those finishes in the shot-put finishing fourth and tenth with throws of 42-3.25 and 34-8.5 respectively.
Coventry saved his best performance for the final heptathlon event of the day winning the high jump in convincing fashion being the only athlete to clear over 6-6 clearing 6-8 for the win. Engebretsen finished tenth after clearing 5-9.25.
After the first four events of the heptathlon Coventry is one of only two athletes with more than 3,000 points currently sitting in second with 3,035 points. Engebresten currently sits in tenth with 2,492 points.
The team of Asefa Wetzel, Trevor Stephen, Albert Steiner and Tyler Dahl closed out the day with the 4,000M distance medley relay. Competing in the event for the first time this season, they clocked a time of 10:06.60 to finish in fifth putting the Cowboys in fifth place as a team heading into day two.

The Cowboys and Cowgirls will be back at it tomorrow starting at 10 a.m. competing in the Mile, 60M Hurdles, 400M, 60M, 800M, 200M, 5000M, Weight Throw, Long Jump, Pole Vault, Heptathlon and High Jump.
