Oreshkina Wins at No. 1 Singles as UW Falls at Kansas

LAWRENCE, Kan. (Feb. 13, 2022) – The Wyoming Cowgirl tennis team's three-match winning streak was snapped Sunday as the Cowgirls traveled to Kansas for a pair of matches. The Jayhawks won the first match of the day, 4-0 and then took match two, 5-1.

In the second match of the day, Maria Oreshkina was victorious at the No. 1 singles spot, defeating KU's Malkia Ngounoue in a three-set thriller, 6-4, 3-6 and 6-3. At the No. 4 position, Lucia Malinak took her opponent, Mariana Velasquez to three sets, but ultimately lost 6-0, 7-6 and 6-4. Only the singles portion of the second match was played Sunday.

The day opened with the Jayhawks taking the doubles' point in match one, winning at the No. 1 and 3 spots. Ana Fernandez and Sophie Zehender were tied at the second spot, 3-3 before the match was called as KU had already secured the doubles' point.

On the singles' side of things in the first match, Kansas won at the first, third and sixth spots to secure the match.

The Cowgirls (4-6) will now have a week to prepare for their home opener Sunday, February 20 as MSU Denver comes to Laramie for a 1 p.m., contest. Wyoming went 4-0 at home last season.
