Fast Start Propels Cowgirls Past Aztecs

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (Oct. 13, 2022) – The Wyoming Cowgirls got started fast and then took care of business in the fourth set as they came away with a four-set victory on the road Thursday night at San Diego State. Set scores went 25-14, 25-22, 20-25 and 25-17 as Wyoming improved to 3-1 on the road in league play this season.

The Cowgirls (7-12, 3-4 MW) were dominant on both sides of the net in the match's opening two sets, hitting .440 in the first and .333 in the second while holding the Aztecs (4-14, 2-5 MW) to a -.030 attacking percentage in the first and .088 in the second. For the match, the Cowgirls held SDSU to an opponent-low in hitting percentage in 2022 at a .028 clip for the match. UW also more than doubled the Aztecs in total blocks in the victory, 13-6. Wyoming hit .258 as a team on the night.

The Brown & Gold had a balanced offensive attack against San Diego State as Corin Carruth had a match-high 11 kills and hit .357 while Tierney Barlow was also in double digits in kills with 10 while hitting .444. Sarah Holcomb and Naya Shimé added eight each while Holcomb hit .615. Holcomb also led the Cowgirls defensively at the net with a career-best eight total blocks. Barlow and Teresa Garza added five block assists each in the win.

Kasia Partyka had a solid all-around match for Wyoming as she paced the team with 34 assists. Partyka also chipped in with three kills, added six digs and a pair of blocks while also leading the way with a pair of service aces. The Cowgirls and Aztecs both notched six aces as a team in the contest.

In the back row, Hailey Zuroske once again led the way for Wyoming with 17 digs while Zoee Smith had seven and Carruth added six.

The Cowgirls controlled much of the first set on the night, breaking open a 12-8 advantage in the first by ending the frame on a 13-6 run. UW trailed by just one point, twice, early in the set at 1-0 and 2-1 before taking control. In the second, the Cowgirls didn't trail and led by as many as six points, at 22-16. After dropping the third, the Cowgirls responded in the fourth set, breaking open a 9-9 tie with a 11-5 run and took a 20-14 advantage and didn't look back, ending the match on a 5-1 run.

Wyoming now looks to make it another perfect 2-0 week on the road in league play this season as it closes the two-match road swing at Fresno State, Saturday at 2 p.m., Mountain Time.
