Chula Vista, Calif. (March 9, 2021) -- Cowboy sophomore
Tyler Severin shot the fourth best round of the day among 120 golfers at the Lamkin San Diego Classic on Tuesday. With his round of 70 (-2), Severin moved up from a tie for 49th place entering the day to tie for eighth heading into Wednesday's final round. That was an improvement of 41 spots in the standings. Severin was one of only five golfers in the field of 120 to shoot an under-par round Tuesday on the very difficult San Diego Country Club course.
Severin had six birdies, eight pars and four bogeys in Tuesday's round. He caught fire on the back nine, with five birdies in the final seven holes. He will enter Wednesday's final round with a total score of 144 (Even). Four golfers are tied for fourth place at 143 (-1) just one stroke ahead of Severin. Two others are tied for second at 140 (-4). Devon Bling of UCLA leads the tournament at 137 (-7).
Severin's 70 (-2) round on Tuesday ranked fourth behind: Eddy Lai of UCLA, who shot a 68 (-4); his teammate Bling of UCLA, who fired a 69 (-3); and Jackson Solem of Denver, who posted a 69 (-3). The fifth golfer to shoot a sub-par round on Tuesday was Sam Meek of Nevada, who fired a 71 (-1).
"Tyler (Severin) is becoming a leader," said
Joe Jensen, UW Director of Golf and Head Men's Golf Coach. "He embraced the situation today, and is playing with a lot of confidence. Tyler had a good plan of how he wanted to play the course today. He has gotten comfortable playing this course. He knows his skill set and understands what he can and can't do. To be in the Top 10 in this field going into the final round is impressive, but he knows he has to put together another good round tomorrow.
"The weather conditions made the course play more difficult today than it was yesterday. We played better as a team today. We played in the same group with Nevada, and we were right there with them. They are one of the better teams in the Mountain West this year, but I think it showed our guys that we can play with the best teams in our conference."
The Cowboys shot a second round 299 (+11), one stroke back of Nevada's 298 (+10). The Pokes' round on Tuesday was better than some of the top ranked teams in the field. The No. 46 ranked USC Trojans carded a second round of 303 (+15), No. 26 Kansas shot a 307 (+19) and No. 20 ranked San Diego State posted a second round of 306 (+18). Wyoming moved up one spot into 15th place in the team standings on Tuesday.
UCLA leads in the team competition. The Bruins are the only team who is under par entering Wednesday's final round. UCLA posted a 36-hole total of 575 (-1) and holds a nine-stroke lead over Nevada, who sits at 584 (+8).
Individually, in addition to Severin's dramatic move up to eighth place, junior
Carl Underwood also had an outstanding even-par round going as he headed into the 18th hole.
"Carl (Underwood) was playing well," said Jensen. "He was at even-par going into the 18th and then he hit into a deep bunker and ended up having a triple on the 18th. But he is still in good position going into the final round.
"Kirby (Coe-Kirkham) played solid today. Jared (Edeen) had a couple hiccups early in his round, but I was pretty happy with the way he played. Dan's (Starzinski) day didn't show it, but he played better. He's putting a lot of pressure on himself to score better, but he just has to work through this tough stretch."
Underwood is tied for 30th at 148 (+4). Coe-Kirkham carries a 156 (+12) total into the final round and is tied for 83rd. Edeen's 157 (+13) has him tied for 89th, and Starzinski is tied for 97th at 160 (+16).
The third and final round of the Lamkin San Diego Classic will tee off Wednesday beginning at 7:10 a.m., Pacific Time (8:10 a.m., M.T.) The Cowboys will be paired with Denver San Jose State and St. Mary's on Wednesday, with their first tee times beginning at 8:20 a.m., P.T. (9:20 a.m., M.T.).
The Lamkin San Diego Classic is being hosted at the San Diego Country Club by San Diego State. The course measures 7,033 yards and plays to a par of 72.
