LARAMIE, Wyo. (March 6, 2021) – The Wyoming tennis team concluded a perfect weekend Saturday in Laramie as the Cowgirls defeated Weber State, 7-0 in a hard-won contest. The Cowgirls had a trio of three-set victories in the win.
The Cowgirls took the doubles point in thrilling fashion as the No. 2 team of Ana Fernandez and Sophie Zehender rallied to defeat Weber State's Megan Davis and Pei-Hsuan Kuo, 6-4 to clinch the point after the two teams split doubles matches at No. 1 and 3. With the win, Fernandez and Zehender improved to 8-1 as a team this season.
Wyoming also won at the No. 3 doubles spot, as Mihaela Kaftanova and Ida Krause made quick work of Megan Lombardi and Ana Gonzalez, blanking the Wildcat duo, 6-0.
On the singles side of play, Wyoming had to battle all day for its match wins. Sophie Zehender got things started for the Cowgirls at the No. 1 position, as she battled to a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Ukita of WSU. UW's next victory came at the No. 3 spot, as Fernandez bested Lombardi 6-4, 6-4 to put the Cowgirls up 3-0 in the match.
Lucia Malinak clinched the win for the Cowgirls at No. 4 singles as she won a three-set battle over Davies, 6-3, 4-6 and 6-4. Next to win for Wyoming was Maria Oreshkina as the No. 2 singles spot, as she battled her way past Ana Morrett Salas in a three-setter, winning 6-2, 5-7 and 6-2. Mihaela Kaftanova won in straight sets at the No. 6 spot, defeating Ana Gonzalez 6-4 and 6-2. Noesjka Brink rounded-out the sweep for the Cowgirls, pulling out another UW win in a three-setter as she defeated Kuo, 6-2, 3-6 and 1-0, winning 10-8 in the third set tiebreak.
Wyoming now has a three-week hiatus before returning to action for Mountain West play. The Cowgirls open league play March 26 and 27 as they face San Jose State and Colorado State, respectively in San Jose.
