HURRICANE, Utah (March 15, 2021) – Junior
Michelle Nguyen led the way for the Wyoming Cowgirl Golf Team as it opened up the first day of the BYU Spring Classic. After 36 holes, the Cowgirls sit 68-over with a total score of 644.
Ngyuen completed her first round with a seven-over 79 for a place 49
th in the first round. She followed that up with two-round total of 13-over 157-over to sit in a tie for 49th. Senior
Erin Sargent went a first round five-over 77 and 11 over-83 for her two round total of 16-over, 160. Fellow teammate sophomore
Samantha Hui had a solid first round carding a score of six-over 78 and posted a second round score of ten-over 82 to tie with Sargent.
"A really long and tough day for us," head coach
Josey Stender said. "We had difficulty adjusting to the greens and too many unrecoverable errant shots. We are much better team with a lot of fight in us to play well tomorrow."
In the line-up for her first tournament of the season, freshman
Morgan Ryan turned in a ten-over, 82 first round while she had a second round card of 11-over 83 for her total of 21-over 165. She was followed by fellow freshman
Jessica Zapf with her 11-over 83 who improved her score to six-over 78 in the second round. Senior
Caitlyn Skavdahl went 14-over 86 which was followed by a nine-over 81. Playing as an individual,
Cristiana Ciasca completed her day with a two-round total of 39-over 183.
Texas Tech leads the field at five-over (581), followed by Iowa at eight-over (584) and Nevada behind at 24-over (600). Brigham Young sits in fourth with a 25-over 601 and Oral Roberts rounds out the top five at 26-over 602.
The tournament is being played at the par-72 6,010-yard Sand Hollow Golf Course in Hurricane, Utah. Wyoming will tee off for the tournament's final round tomorrow morning at 8:30 a.m. MT.
