LARAMIE, Wyo. (March 10, 2021) – After a two-week hiatus, the Wyoming Cowgirl golf team will resume its spring season tomorrow at the 2021 Pizza Hut Lady Thunderbird Tournament followed by a 54-hole stint at the BYU Spring Classic. Both tournaments are scheduled to be played in St. George, Utah.
"The team has been working really hard the last few weeks and we are looking forward to two great golf courses," head coach
Josey Stender said. "We have fond memories of competing in St. George and the unique landscape. The back-to-back events will also allow us to get into a good rhythm."
The first tournament is set up on the Par-72, 5914-yard Sunbrook Golf Club (Pointe and Blackrock). It is set for a shotgun start beginning at 9 a.m. on Thursday with 36 holes of play. The third round is also scheduled for 9 a.m. on Friday. The BYU Spring Classic is set for an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. It will be at the Sand Hollow Resort with 36 holes on day one and 18 on the second.
Along with the Cowgirls, the 15-Team Tournament field features Cal Baptist, Cal State Bakersfield, Dixie State, Eastern Washington, Idaho State, Illinois State, Montana, North Dakota State, Oral Roberts, South Dakota State, Southern Utah, Utah Valley and Weber State.
The Cowgirl lineup features for the weekend includes
Cristiana Ciasca,
Samantha Hui,
Jessica Zapf,
Erin Sargent and
Caitlyn Skavdahl.
Morgan Ryan and
Michelle Nguyen will compete as individuals.
The last time Wyoming competed in the event was 2018 when three Cowgirls finished in the top-ten in the Thunderbird Invite. UW closed out the event out with a team score of 292 (+4) to take home a two-shot victory. The final round team score tied for second-best in Cowgirl history and the win was the first for UW since the fall of 2008.
Former Cowgirl
Gabrielle Gibson led the charge on the day with a 73 (+1). She moved up a spot to finish the 36-hole event tied for fourth with a two-day total 148 (+4). One shot was Skavdahl who recorded a 75 (+3) on Friday to finish tied for sixth. Former Cowgirl
Megan Knadler also shot a 73 (+1) during the final 18 holes. Knadler joined Gibson and Skavdahl in the top-ten, as she earned a share of ninth-place with a two-round 151 (+7). Posting a team-best 71 (-1) on Friday, Sargent tied for 13th with a total 152 (+8). It was her third top-15 finish as a Cowgirl.
Sarah Hankins closed out the event with a 78 (+6) to tie for 26th with a 157 (+13), as
Kaylee Knadler, who played as an individual, shot a 79 (+7) over the final 18 holes.
In the second tournament of the week for the Cowgirls will be the BYU Spring Classic. This year, it will be played at the Sand Hallow Resort Golf Course.
In last year's tournament at the BYU Entrada Classic, the Cowgirls shot a final round of 21-over, 309, and had a three day total of 65-over 929 to place ninth for the two day tournament. North Texas won the event at 11-over (875), followed by Iowa at 30-over (894) and host school BYU in third at 35-over (899). Northern Illinois finished fourth with a 50-over 914, while Princeton and Idaho tied for fifth at 55-over 919. Lauren Cox of UNT took the individual title with a three-round total of even, 216.
Nguyen shot a final round of 7-over 79 to finish with a three day total of 15-over 231 on her way to a 24
th spot finish to lead all Cowgirls. It is her highest finish of the season. Zapf, playing as an individual, posted a career-best final round of 4-over 76 for her best finish of her career at 17-over 233 and in a tie for 27
th.
Skavdahl was the big mover on the day. She carded a 1-over 73 for a three day total of 18-over 234 and moved all the way into a tie for 30
th. Sargent turned in a third round score of 7-over 79 to finish with a three day total of 18-over 234 to also place in a tie for 30
th. Ciasca completed her third round with a 10-over 82 and placed in a tie for 56
th with a score of 26-over 242.
