IRVING, Texas (March 1, 2021) – Pre-seeds for this weekend's Big 12 Wrestling Championships hosted at the BOK Center in Tulsa, Okla., have been released, announced by the conference Monday. A total of eight Cowboys in the Wyoming lineup earned top-eight pre-seeds for the tournament.
The trio of
Hayden Hastings (174),
Tate Samuelson (184) and
Stephen Buchanan (197) all received the two seed at their respective weights. All three Cowboys have multiple wins over ranked opponents on the season including wins over top-ten opponents. Hastings and Buchanan are both currently ranked in the top ten of the NCAA Coaches poll.
Cole Moody (165) and
Brian Andrews (285) are the next highest pre-seeded Cowboys with both wrestlers pre-seeded third. Moody is tied for the most wins on the Cowboys roster this season with 11 and has racked up five bonus point victories. Andrews will enter the Big 12 Championships with four wins on the season, two of those coming over ranked opponents.
Jacob Wright is the No. 5 pre-seed in the 157-pound bracket. Wright ended his regular season on an eight-match winning streak, capped off with a win over No. 10 Wyatt Sheets (OKST) in the Cowboy Challenge Tournament finals.
In the 133-pound bracket
Job Greenwood was tabbed as the No. 6 pre-seed. In his first season in the Cowboy starting lineup Greenwood tallied seven wins picking up highlight wins over No. 14 Drew Marten (CMU) and No. 15 Jared Van Vleet (AF)
Rounding out the pre-seeded wrestlers for UW is
Chase Zollmann with the No. 8 pre-seed in the 141-pound bracket. Zollmann highlighted his regular season by winning the UVU Round Robin Tournament going as well as finishing third at the Cowboy Challenge Tournament.
The brackets for the Big 12 tournaments will be released on Wednesday, March 3
rd. Tournament pre-seeds and brackets are subject to change following the coaches' meeting on Friday.
