COLUMBIA, Mo. (Jan. 8, 2021) – The Wyoming wrestling squad split duals Friday night picking up their first win of the season in a 24-11 upset victory over No.17 Central Michigan. In their second dual of the day the Cowboys fell to No.10 Missouri, 29-3.
"Today was a really good opportunity to see a couple of really good teams we usually don't see during the regular season. The competition was great." Head Coach
Mark Branch said. "Central Michigan is a really good team and we performed really well. That's a big win for us."
The Cowboys Started fast against CMU thanks to a first round fall from
Job Greenwood. Greenwood got into a body lock position against No.19 Drew Marten and got the best of the best of position throwing Marten to his back and pinning him in just 52 seconds. For Greenwood, it was his first win as a Cowboy.
At 157 pounds, another Cowboy would pick up his first win in the Brown and Gold. No.17
Jacob Wright made his debut for the Cowboys against Johnny Lovett. After a back and forth start to the match Wright settled in and powered his way to a 10-4 victory.
In the 165-pound bout
Cole Moody was declared the winner after the CMU wrestler was disqualified. Due to the disqualification CMU was deducted one team point.
No.15
Hayden Hastings faced Jake Lowell next and controlled the match for its entirety. Unable to turn his opponent, Hastings racked up riding time and added a couple of takedowns for a 9-3 victory.
The Cowboys would keep it rolling at 184 pounds as No.19
Tate Samuelson faced off against Ben Cushman. Samuelson wrestled a strong match against Cushman and controlled the third period for the 6-3 victory.
Wyoming got one more win against CMU at 197 pounds. No.18
Stephen Buchanan got to his offense early in the match getting take down and never looking back. Buchanan doubled up his opponent in a 10-5 victory.
Against Missouri, Hastings would be the lone Cowboy to pick up a win. Hastings faced Sean Harman and after a take down in the first period Hastings stayed in control and powered his way to the 6-1 victory. He was also the only Cowboy to finish 2-0 on the day.
The Cowboys will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 23 as they compete in another tri-meet against host Utah Valley and Pac-12 powerhouse Arizona State.
