LARAMIE, Wyo. (Jan. 28, 2021) – After three straight weeks of being on the road the Wyoming Wrestling squad will return home to host Big 12 rival Air Force on Saturday night. The Air Force and Wyoming dual meet will be held in the Arena-Auditorium on Saturday and is set to start at 5 p.m. The event will include four individual matches after the dual has concluded.
"There has been a different level of excitement this week leading up to the dual on Saturday." Head Coach
Mark Branch Said" We know our opportunities are limited this season and our opportunities to compete in front of our amazing fans has been even more rare, so to be able to suit up in the AA and have a Big 12 showdowns is something we have been looking forward to. I want to see a heightened energy level on that mat come Saturday."
Last weekend the Cowboys had a successful outing at the UVU Round Robin Tournament, winning six weight classes and having five individual champions and two co-champions. Amongst those champions were
Jake Svihel and
Job Greenwood who both went 3-0 at 133 pounds. Cole moody and
Chase Zollmann both went 2-0 on the day with both wrestlers improving their current win streaks to five.
The Cowboys started their season with three straight in duals in which they 1-2 picking up an impressive win over at No.17 Central Michigan, 24-11. Saturday will now serve as UW's first dual competition since Jan.8.
On the other hand, Air Force has started their season 0-2 after facing South Dakota State and No.5 Oklahoma State to start their season. The Pokes and Falcons have already competed against each other once this season at the Air Force Individual match event, no team scores were kept for the event but many Wyoming and Air Force wrestlers squared off against each other.
Last time the two teams competed in dual action Wyoming came away with a 21-12 victory over Air Force in Colorado Springs last season.
Hayden Hastings,
Stephen Buchanan and
Brian Andrews all had bonus point wins in that victory.
There will also be individual matches held on Saturday in the UniWyo Sports Complex. There will be a total of nine individual matches in the UniWyo starting at 3 p.m. A limited number of tickets to the event in the UniWyo Sports Complex will be available for sale at the UniWyo entrance based on availability.
