LARAMIE, Wyo. (Jan. 1, 2021) – The Wyoming Cowboy Wrestling squad will get their 2020-21 season underway on Sunday as they host Big 12 opponent Northern Colorado. The meet is set to begin at 2 p.m. MT and will be closed to the public, with only select family members of the student-athletes allowed to attend.
"Every wrestling program has a lot of questions they want answered. That's a product of COVID and not competing in 10 months." Said Head Coach
Mark Branch. "This dual will begin the process of answering questions and figuring out where we are at. UNC has a very good team and I'm excited to be able to start our journey back with such a challenging test."
The Cowboys feature six wrestlers in their projected lineup that are ranked by various outlets led by returning Big 12 champion
Brian Andrews who is ranked 9
th at heavyweight.
Jaron Jensen is ranked 31
st at 149,
Jacob Wright is ranked 17
th at 157,
Hayden Hastings is ranked 15
th at 174,
Tate Samuelson is ranked 21
st at 184,
Stephen Buchanan is ranked 18
th at 197.
The pokes are 54-29 all time against Northern Colorado but have one the last seven meetings between the two teams. Last season the Cowboys hosted Northern Colorado in Laramie and picked up a 22-11 victory over the Bears led by bonus point victories from
Cole Moody,
Stephen Buchanan and
Brian Andrews.
The Pokes enter the 2020-21 season 124-63 under Branch during his first 12 seasons for the Brown and Gold, including a mark off 59-20 in conference duals. Last season, the Cowboys went 8-10 overall, and 4-4 in the Big 12.
