Laramie, Wyo. (Sept. 28, 2019) -- Wyoming senior
Dan Starzinski finished with a 54-hole total of 217 (+1) and tied for 16th place in a field of 90 collegiate golfers, and the Wyoming Cowboys place 12th in a field of 16 top level teams at the 2019 William H. Tucker Invitational that concluded play on Saturday.
Starzinski notched his second Top 20 finish in the first three tournaments of the fall season. Starzinski finished with an even par round of 72 after shooting rounds of 75 and 70 in the first two rounds. The Cowboys finished at 893 (+29) to finish in 12th, two strokes behind UNLV and Coastal Carolina, who tied for 10th at 891 (+27). Rounding out the individual scoring for the Cowboys were: sophomore
Kirby Coe-Kirkham tying for 45th at 225 (+9); sophomore
Tyler Severin and junior
Carl Underwood both tied for 62nd at 229 (+13); and junior
Bryce Waters finished in a tie for 73rd at 231 (+15). Cowboy redshirt freshman
Liam Clancy, playing as an individual, tied for 50th at 226 (+10).
Host school New Mexico and BYU ended regulation tied for the tournament lead. In a one-hole playoff, all five Lobo players shot -1 on the playoff hole. BYU's Kelton Hirsch and Carson Lundell both made par while the other three BYU players finished -1 on the playoff hole. The top four players counted, so UNM won the tournament with a score of -4 to -3 for BYU.
Peter Kuest of BYU broke the tournament record with his three-round score of 200 (-16) to capture the individual title by nine strokes. The previous record was 201 set in 1992 by former Lobo Tim Herron. Herron also set the tournament record for a single round at 62. Kuest's best round was just one off that record at 63.
"We played solid today, but the tournament was a difficult challenge, and that's reflected in the team scores," said
Joe Jensen, University of Wyoming Director of Golf and Head Men's Golf Coach. "We would have loved to have caught those two teams (UNLV and Coastal Carolina) that finished just one stroke ahead of us in 10th place. But overall it was a good experience for our young team to play on that caliber of course. They're hosting an NCAA Regional here next year. It was also good for us to play against some really good teams. I think that will be good experience for us in the long run. I scheduled this tournament for those reasons.
"Dan (Starzinski) played well this week. To get a Top 20 finish at a tournament like this is a really solid finish. Proud of the effort from the guys. They played hard, and I do believe this experience will pay dividends for us down the road."
The tournament was played on the UNM Championship Golf Course. The course measured 7,555 yards and played to a par of 72.
Wyoming will return to action on Friday-Sunday, Oct. 4-6 at the Paintbrush Invitational in Parker, Colo., hosted by the University of Denver.
