LARAMIE, Wyo. (April 16, 2019) – The UW track & field teams are ready for a busy week in California, as the Pokes are scheduled to compete in three meets this week in the Golden State.
A majority of the team will begin at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate hosted by Long Beach State on Thursday, April 18. They will stick around and compete at the Beach Invitational on Friday and Saturday, April 19-20. Additionally, Wyoming distance runners will enjoy running at sea level at the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays in Torrance, Calif., as the two-day meet runs Thursday and Friday, April 18-19.
"This is a big week for us," said head track & field coach
Bryan Berryhill. "When we look at our outdoor schedule, this is one of the most important weeks on our schedule leading into the Mountain West championships. It's going to be great competition out there, and the weather looks like it's going to be nice. Hopefully we can go out there, compete with some confidence and come away with some personal best and season bests to set us up to have a great conference meet here in a little over two weeks."
Heading into this week,
Michael Downey is in the top-10 in two events in the Mountain West, as he ranks third in the 1,500 meters at 3:49.33 and 10
th in the 5,000m at 14:28.69.
Christopher Henry is seventh in the 10,000m at 29:24.74, while
Harry Ewing leads the conference by five seconds in the 3,000m steeplechase at 8:42.72.
Bryce Ailshie is fifth in the 800m with a season-best time of 1:51.13, while
Brandon McGuire is third in the league in the 400m hurdles with a time of 53.89.
In the field,
William Nolan ranks third in the MW in the triple jump with a mark of 48 feet, 11.5 inches, while
Reece Shannon is in fifth at 46-0.5.
Colton Paller is second in the league in the discus with a throw of 171-4.
The Cowboy hammer crew are fixtures at the top of the league rankings, as
Eric McArthur,
Kirk Unland and
Hap Frketich are first, second and fourth, with throws of 196-5, 196-3 and 189-0, respectively.
For the Cowgirls,
Jerayah Davis is in the top-10 in three different events, as the Casper native is third in the 100m dash at 11.53 seconds, eighth in the 200m dash with a time of 24.34 and tops in the long jump with a school-record leap of 20-10.75.
Jasmyne Cooper's time of 2:10.95 in the 800m is good for seventh in the league, while
Kacey Doner's steeplechase time of 10:40.94 is also seventh.
In the field,
Ja'la Henderson leads the league in the triple jump at 42-9, and is second in the long jump with a mark of 20-5, which is second all-time at UW.
Emelda Malm-Annan is second in the hammer throw with a personal-best mark of 202-1, third all-time at Wyoming, while Anna Gills is seventh in the same event with a throw of 172-0.
