ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (February 23, 2019) – At the conclusion of the Mountain West Indoor Track & Field championships,
Jerayah Davis was named the women's Outstanding Performer for the weekend's meet. She is the first Cowgirl to earn the honor in Wyoming's tenure in the Mountain West.
"Jerayah is very deserving of being the Most Outstanding Performer of the meet," said head coach
Bryan Berryhill. "She had a fantastic two days and competed with effort and focus in four events. She should be very proud of herself as this award is very hard to earn."
Davis earned a total of 21 team points during the meet, as she placed second in the 200m dash, third in the 60m dash, fourth in the long jump and was a part of the 4x400m relay team that finished seventh.
Overall, the Cowboys finished fifth with 76 points, and the Cowgirls placed seventh with 57 points. The Cowboys improved from a sixth-place finish in 2018, while the Cowgirls moved up two spots from ninth in 2018.
"I thought we competed hard today," Berryhill said. "Both teams were much improved from this meet year ago. We still have areas we can improve on, and I'm confident we will do that before the outdoor conference meet in May."
Ja'la Henderson was Wyoming's lone champion on the day, as she finished first in the triple jump with a leap of 42 feet, 8.25 inches to sweep the horizontal jump titles at the MW Championships. She won the long jump on Friday on her final attempt of the day.
"Ja'la just continues to jump really well and win conference titles," Berryhill said. "We're excited to see what she can do at nationals."
Henderson is currently in the top-16 nationally in both the long jump and the triple jump. The top 16 athletes in each event are invited to the NCAA National Championships.
Aumni Ashby and
Shayla Howell also earned points in the triple jump, finishing fourth and seventh with leaps of 39-8.75 and 39-1.25, respectively.
Davis concluded a busy meet by competing in the 60m and 200m finals. In the 60m, she placed third with a time of 7.31. Later, in the 200m she set a new personal best, solidifying the No. 2 all-time mark at Wyoming, by finishing in 23.76 to take second.
Jasmyne Cooper scored points for the Cowgirls following a seventh-place finish in the 800m with an altitude-adjusted time of 2:14.48. In the final event of the day,
Jordan Edmonds, Davis,
Shayla Howell and Cooper combined to run a 3:52.04 in the 4x400m relay to place seventh and pick up a pair of team points.
Kacey Doner ran the fourth-fastest 3,000m in Cowgirl history, clocking in a 9:47.72 after an altitude adjustment.
For the Cowboys,
Christopher Henry and
Bryce Ailshie had fantastic days on the track. Henry finished third in the 3,000m race with an altitude-adjust time of 8:09.71, while Ailshie placed fourth in a loaded 800m race with a time of 1:50.78.
"Chris Henry again used his fantastic kick to earn another all-conference finish in the 3,000m," Berryhill said. "He had a great two days and left everything he had on the track."
Ailshie wasn't done after the 800m, as he teamed up with
Jace Marx,
Jacob Harthun and
Brandon McGuire to run a 3:15.21 in the 4x400m relay to take second in the conference. That time is seventh-best in program history.
"It was awesome to see our men's 4x400m relay team end their competition with a silver medal," Berryhill said. "Those four guys are very hard working and compete with great confidence."
Marx competed in two other races on the day and scored three solo points for the Cowboys. He placed seventh in the 200m with a time of 21.83 and eighth in the 60m with a time of 7.07.
McCade Johnson earned four team points by finishing fifth in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.34. Harthun finished the 400m race in 49.58 to place sixth and round out Wyoming's track scorers.
In the field,
William Nolan and
Reece Shannon placed fourth and eighth in the triple jump with leaps of 48-3.25 and 44-4.25, respectively, to earn a total of six points for the Pokes.
Wyoming will see who qualifies for the NCAA National Championships, held Friday and Saturday, March 8-9 in Birmingham, Ala.
