LARAMIE, Wyo. (Nov. 14, 2019) – The Wyoming wrestling squad opens 2019-20 dual and Big 12 action Saturday as the Cowboys travel to face Air Force Saturday at 7 p.m., at the US Air Force Academy.
The Pokes have competed in a pair of tournaments so far this season, crowning four champions at the Cowboy Open Nov. 2 and brining home two titles last week at the Northern Colorado Open. At the Cowboy, Brian Andrews at heavyweight, Cale Davidson at 197 pounds and Hayden Hastings at 174 took home titles. Stephen Buchanan has taken the crown at 197 at both the Cowboy and UNC Opens. Chase Zollmann won at 141 last week as well. Both Buchanan and Zollmann wrestled unattached.
The Cowboys feature six wrestlers in their projected lineup that are ranked by various outlets. Cole Verner is ranked 14th at 125, Montorie Bridges is No. 7 at 133, Hastings is No. 15 at 174, Tate Samuelson comes in at 16th at 184, Davidson is ranked 19th at 197 and Andrews rounds out the rankings at 13th at heavyweight.
Wyoming is 43-12 all-time in duals against the Falcons and are a perfect 11-0 under Head Coach Mark Branch against AFA. Last season, the Cowboys won the dual, 33-3 in Laramie. UW came away with nine victories last season, including four bonus-point wins.
The Pokes enter the 2019-20 dual slate 116-53 under Branch during his first 11 seasons for the Brown and Gold, including a mark off 55-16 in conference duals. Last season, the Cowboys went 16-4 overall and 6-2 in the Big 12, reaching as high as No. 11 in the NWCA poll.
