COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Sept. 14, 2018) – The Wyoming tennis team had an up and down day on Friday as it continued play at the ITA Bedford Cup in the Mountains.
Freshman
Ana Fernandez won her only match of the day with a three set victory, 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (8) over Gabrielle Dekkers of Utah State. Fellow freshman
Mihaela Kaftanova won in a walkover, while freshman
Ida Krause beat Hristina Cvetkovic of Idaho State, 6-4 6-4. The final Cowgirl in action was junior Ana Rojo who defeated Sarah Cheverie of Montana State, 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (7).
Senior
Tessa van Der Ploeg lost in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, against Maria Tavares of Idaho, while fellow senior
Elisa Koonik dropped a tough three setter, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, against Hanneke Lodewijks of Northern Arizona.
All three doubles teams were back in action on Friday. Koonik and van Der Ploeg defeated Ellie Millard and Eirene Granville of Northern Arizona, 8-4, but lost to the team of Meredith Jones and Ashleigh Harvey from Air Force, 8-6, in the round of eight. Fernandez and Krause lost in a battle 9-8 (3) against Annaliese County and Sidnee Lavati of Utah State but responded with a victory over Ghita Nassik and Jessica Stefan of Southern Utah, 8-1. Kaftanova and Royo dropped an 8-0 contest against Air Force and were defeated 8-3 by Northern Arizona.
The Cowgirls will compete in both singles and doubles action tomorrow.
