LARAMIE, Wyo. (Aug. 18, 2018) – The Wyoming volleyball Gold team got the better end of the team's annual Brown and Gold Scrimmage Saturday night at the UW Arena-Auditorium, sweeping the Brown team, 3-0.

Sophomore Jackie McBride (11) and freshman KC McMahon (10) led the Gold with double-digit kills, while Cori Aafedt and Marissa Harmon compiled 11 and 20 assists, respectively. Tara Traphagan recorded 15 digs in the match, while freshman Jaiden Chase added 13.

For the Brown, senior Emily Lewis posted 10 kills, while Marissa Hines led all players in assists with 22. Junior Madi Fields recorded 16 digs on the night to lead all players in that category.

The Gold team dominated the first set of the night, running away with the frame, 25-16. The teams went back and forth in the start of the set with ties at 4-all and 6-all, but Gold outscored the Brown team, 19-10 from that point to clinch the game and take an early lead in the match. McBride led the Gold team in kills with five on seven attacks, while Traphagan recorded seven digs and Aafedt racked up 10 assists. On the Brown side, Lewis and Halie McArdle both scored three kills.

The second set was more tightly contested than the first, with the two teams combining for six ties and four lead changes in the set. Gold, however, would come back from a 20-18 deficit by outscoring the Brown team, 7-4, over the final 11 games of the set. McMahon led the Gold with six kills, while Marissa Hines added eight assists and two kills for the Brown.

In the final set, the teams traded blows once again, but the Gold team came up with the 27-25 edge. Traphagan led Gold with five kills on a .455 hitting percentage, while Aafedt added seven assists. The Brown team used a balanced attack, boasting four players with multiple kills in the final frame: Lewis, McArdle, Kaytlen Freeland and Carlie Fikse.

The Cowgirls will be back in the Arena-Auditorium next weekend to officially open the 2018 season when they host No. 15 Colorado, Oral Roberts and North Florida in the Rumble in the Rockies Tournament. Wyoming will open the tournament Friday at noon against North Florida. For ticket info, go to gowyo.com/tickets.
