LARAMIE, Wyo. (April 25, 2018) – Wyoming will return to action on Friday in the quarterfinals of the 2018 MW Tennis Championship in Boise, Idaho. The fifth-seeded Cowgirls will take on the fourth-seeded San Diego State Aztecs. The match is set for 10 a.m. MT at the Appleton Tennis Center. Live stats will be located at GoWyo.com.
"I think that we feel the players are ready," head coach
Dean Clower said. "We are playing our best tennis at this time. I like our match-up against San Diego State. With playing at altitude in Boise, I think it gives us an advantage against the West Coast teams. Anyone can win this championship. It will come down to who puts it all on the line at the right moment."
The Cowgirls enter the weekend with an 11-7 overall record and finished with a 3-2 mark in league play. Sophomore
Milka Genkova led the way with 23 victories on the season, while going 11-4 in dual play and 2-2 in MW action. Junior
Elisa Koonik recorded a 19-7 mark, 12-2 in dual play and a perfect 5-0 in league action. Senior
Magdalena Stencel and
Ana Tkachenko posted 16-14 and 16-13 singles marks, respectively. Stencel went 4-1 in MW play as well. Junior
Tessa van Der Ploeg is currently 15-10 and 8-7 this spring. In doubles action, Koonik and van Der Ploeg are 9-5 this spring and 3-0 in conference.
San Diego State enters the tournament with a 10-12 record and 1-3 in MW play. They are led junior Jenny Moinard who has a 23-7 overall mark and went 3-1 in league play. Freshman Abbie Mulbarger is 16-9 on the year and finished 3-1 as well in MW play. This will be the 18th meeting between the two schools. SDSU leads the series 14-3. The last time the two squads met was April 24, 2015 in the quarterfinals of the MW tournament. The Cowgirls held on for the 4-3 victory. The Aztecs are coached by Peter Mattera who is in his 23
rd season with the program.
