BOULDER, Colo. – Cowgirl junior
Ja'la Henderson kept up the momentum from her brilliant indoor season with another great performance on Saturday, winning the women's long jump at the Jerry Quiller Classic to highlight the outdoor season opener for Wyoming track & field. Henderson leapt 20 feet, 2.5 inches to vault from ninth to second on the UW all-time list for the event, while senior teammate
Caleb Seeton gave the Pokes a sweep in the long jump by capturing top honors on the men's side at 22-8.
"I'm happy with their performances today, making the transition from indoor to outdoor," UW associate head coach
Quincy Howe said of the jumps group. "Even though the event is essentially the same, there are so many more variables that need to be considered, including tailwinds and crosswinds which may influence the jumpers' abilities to hit an eight-inch board running from up to 125 feet away."
Henderson is now just an inch and a half short of the UW record in the women's outdoor long jump, 20-4, set by Patricia Miller in 1980. On Saturday, Henderson easily won the event by well over two feet. Meanwhile, Seeton posted a five-inch victory on the men's side while fellow senior
Bobby Wingeleth was fourth at 21-7.25. In the women's high jump, junior
Sofia Hof posted a mark of 5-3 to take fourth place, while a quintet of Cowgirls jumped 5-1 and finished between sixth and 11
th overall.
Wyoming's throws squad had a solid day in the discus throw. Senior
Hannah Carr posted a good finish on the women's side, taking second at 145-1.25, while senior Tori Sleep took seventh at 128-5.5. Senior duo
Garrett Lynch and
Damon Unland took third and fourth, respectively, in the men's competition. Lynch tossed 161-11.5, while Unland recorded a mark of 158-9.
Just a handful of Wyoming athletes competed on the track during Saturday's meet. Junior sprinter
Sam Kirkeide notched a fifth-place finish in the men's 200 meters, clocking a time of 22.22 seconds. Meanwhile, freshman
McCade Johnson competed in both hurdles events, taking seventh in the 110-meter hurdles at 15.45 and fourth in the 400-meter hurdles at 55.92. The Cowboy sprints group had a great finish in the men's 4x400-meter relay, taking the top spot with a raw time of 3:16.42.

Ariana Williams and senior
Heidi Pfoor finished back-to-back in the women's 100-meter hurdles. Williams was second with a time of 14.36, while Pfoor took third at 14.42. Pfoor recorded a sixth-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles at 1:02.65, while Williams was sixth at 1:05.40 and freshman
