Cowboys Hold Narrow Lead at Midpoint of WAC Championships

HOUSTON, Texas (Feb. 22, 2018) – After two days of competition, Wyoming men's swimming and diving sits in first place by just seven points at the 2018 Western Athletic Conference Championships.

The Cowboys started out strong in the 500 freestyle, placing four swimmers in the top 10. Sophomore Seth Borgert posted a career-best mark of 4:24.50 to place fourth. Junior Jack Herron placed fifth with a season-best time of 4:26.69. Senior Eric Oleson and sophomore Jacob Harlan placed ninth and 10th, with times of 4:28.05 and 4:28.60 respectively.

Senior Wade Nelson placed second in the 200 individual medley, Wyoming's top finisher in the event, with a season-best mark of 1:46.94. Junior Liam Holt, freshman Brayden Love and freshman Mitchell Hovis placed ninth, 10th and 11th, the top three times in the B final. All three posted career-best times.

Senior Kyle White recorded a new personal best in the 50 freestyle, clocking a 19.84 to place fourth. Sophomore PJ Musser finished 13th with a time of 20.35.

Senior Ryan Russi matched yesterday's performance on the three-meter, finishing second on the one-meter on Thursday. Russi scored a career-best 319.50, ahead of sophomore Scotia Mullin who finished third with a season-high 318.05.

In the final event of the night, the Cowboys took third in the 200 freestyle relay. The team of Musser, junior David Murphy, senior Jacob Porter and White finished in 1:20.53, a season best.

Wyoming still leads at the halfway point of the conference championships, finishing Thursday with a team total of 308 points. UNLV moved up from fourth place into second with a total of 201 points. Grand Canyon is in third with 250 points, with Air Force in fourth with 208 points. CSU Bakersfield (135) and Seattle (80) round out the rest of the conference.

Preliminaries will start at 9:30 a.m. MT tomorrow, followed by finals in the evening session, beginning at 5 p.m. A full schedule, along with links to live results and live streaming, can be found on the schedules tab at gowyo.com.
