Hometown Biography Summary Biography Junior (2016-17): Nelson's successful season was highlighted by a standout performance at the 2017 WAC Championships. Nelson set a new school record in the 200 individual medley, placing second. He also became a conference champion in the 400 individual medley, after placing second in 2016. His time of 3:45.40 was the second-fastest in school history behind his brother, Ryan. Nelson also placed third in the 50 back and 100 back, and fifth in the 200 butterfly, earning crucial points for the Cowboys on their way to a second-place conference finish. Nelson also put forward an impressive performance against UNLV, placing first in the 50 back, 200 butterfly and 400 individual medley. Against Colorado Mesa, Nelson was again undefeated, earning the top time in the 200 breaststroke and 200 butterfly. Sophomore (2015-16): Nelson had a terrific sophomore season for Wyoming, as he competed in a number of meets throughout the year. He was named All-WAC in the 200 IM, 200 fly and 400 IM. At the WAC Championships, Nelson had a time of 3:47.53 and came in second behind his brother, Ryan in the 400 IM. He also placed third in the 200 fly with a mark of 1:45.10, and fifth in the 200 IM (1:47.29). He was also a member of the all-conference 200 and 400 medley relay teams. Nelson took second in the both the 200 breast (2:08.34) and the 50 fly (23.15) to begin the season against Denver. At the Purdue Invite, he claimed third place in the 200 fly (1:48.15) and took second against No. 14 Utah in the 100 fly (51.10). He also brought home two third-place finishes against Arizona State, as he recorded a 50.94 in the 100 back and a 4:00.31 in the 400 IM. Freshman (2014-15): At the WAC Championships, Nelson finished sixth in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:48.21. It was a top-10 time in Wyoming history. He also finished fifth in the 400 IM with a time of 3:52.82, and seventh in the 200 IM with a time of 1:49.73. Nelson took home two wins against Colorado School of Mines in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:10.92 and the 400 IM at 4:14.68. High School: Graduate of Edison High School. Nelson competed for the Golden West Swim Club and was coached by former US National Team Director Mark Schubert. He competed in USA Swimming’s Junior National Championships in the 200 Butterfly, the 200 Breaststroke and in the 400 individual medley. As a senior at Edison High School he finished third in the state in the 100 butterfly. He was named MVP his senior season and was inducted into the Edison High School Hall of Fame. Nelson was named an NISCA All-American in the 100 butterfly. Also excelled in the classroom as an Academic All-America selection. Also recruited by Utah, Denver and George Washington. Personal: Wade is the son of Tim and Irva Nelson. Wade has an older brother, Ryan who is currently a junior at Wyoming. He also has two young brothers, Zach and Dylan. He was born on June 20, 1996. He is majoring in Physiology/pre-med at UW.
