BOULDER, Colo. – Junior Cowgirl
Ja'la Henderson obliterated the UW women's indoor triple jump record once again on Friday to highlight the first of two days of action for Wyoming track & field at the Colorado Invitational. Henderson, who previously broke the school record with a jump of 41 feet, 1.5 inches at the same site just three weekends ago, leapt an amazing 42-11 to win the event by over three feet on Friday. It was just her third collegiate performance in the triple jump.
"She's taking to the triple jump like a duck to water," said UW associate head coach
Quincy Howe about Henderson on Friday. "We always knew she had that potential but it was just a matter of when she would pick up a new event. She's totally new to it, so we're being cautious with how much we do in training and how much she competes in it. Her result today reflected that she's an elite jumper."
Henderson's mark is currently tied for 13
th in the NCAA. Once the track & field weekend concludes, the mark could lead the Mountain West by well over a foot. The Cowgirl star added a runner-up finish in the long jump for good measure on Friday, posting a season-best mark of 19-6. Fellow junior
Allegra Carson competed alongside Henderson in the triple jump, finishing ninth with a mark of 37-1.
Henderson and freshman Cowboy
William Nolan have formed a dynamic jumps duo under Howe's tutelage this season, and both turned in their best performances of the season on Friday as Nolan put forth personal bests in both jumps events to go with Henderson's impressive showing. The Cheyenne, Wyo., native took second in the triple jump with a collegiate personal best of 47-11.75, just an inch shy of event winner Isaac Grimes of Chadron State. Junior Cowboy Junior
Kyle Alexander placed seventh in the event, leaping 45-2.5, while freshman
Leighton Lanier was 15
th at 43-0.5. Nolan also surpassed his previous collegiate best in the long jump, leaping 23-3.25 for third place.
"He's been learning a lot of new things in training," Howe said of Nolan. "He's been able to translate that into the meets. That's why you can see that consistency in him. Today was a breakthrough in the long jump."
In the high jump, Cowgirls
Sofia Hof and
Marie Doherty both jumped 5-3.25 on Friday. It was a collegiate personal best for Doherty, who tied for 10
th place, while Hof tied for sixth place due to recording the mark on an earlier attempt. On the men's side, sophomore
Kyle Pollock jumped 6-1.25 for sixth place.
In the men's weight throw, sophomore
Hap Frketich tossed a season-best 56 feet even to finish eighth, while
Garrett Lynch took 15
th at 52-10.75. On the women's side, senior
Hannah Carr took 11
th at 52-6.75 while freshman
Addison Henry finished 12
th at 51-0.25.
Seniors
Ricky Faure and
Lauren Hamilton competed in the seeded sections of the men's mile and women's mile, respectively, the only events to take place on the Sklar Family Track during the Friday session. Hamilton posted an adjusted time of 4 minutes, 48.39 seconds, less than two seconds shy of her personal best, taking seventh place overall in the process. Faure clocked in with an adjusted time of 4:13.09, taking 15
th overall.
