LARAMIE, Wyo. – With a team victory and a third-place team finish at its first two tournaments of the 2017-18 fall season, the Wyoming Cowboy golf team aims to continue its impressive start to the 2017-18 season with a trip to Erie, Colo., on Monday and Tuesday for the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational. Wyoming has enjoyed recent success at the 7,676-yard, par-72 Colorado National Golf Club, taking home runner-up honors at the 2016 tournament while setting a team score record that stood until the Cowboys' victory at the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational earlier this fall.
 
Junior John Murdock and senior Drew McCullough have been the driving forces behind Wyoming's early success this year. Murdock followed his season-opening individual victory at the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational with a runner-up finish at the Ram Masters Invitational and is currently tied for seventh in the NCAA with a 67.7 stroke average according to Golfstat.com. McCullough has also posted top-10 finishes in each of the first two tournaments of the season and holds an impressive stroke average of 69.3.
 
Wyoming posted a team score of 845 (-19) en route to a second-place finish at the 2016 Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational, recording rounds of 280 (-8), 285 (-3) and 280 (-8) to set a program record score for 54 holes to par. Ryan Wallen, who is now serving as a Graduate Assistant for Wyoming golf, earned a runner-up finish at last season's tournament with a total score of 206 (-10). Former Cowboy Kamrin Allen was the runner-up the season before with a total score of 209 (-7).
 
Wyoming will be making its eighth appearance at the University of Colorado-hosted tournament in 2017. The 19-team field includes nine teams the Cowboys have already defeated in either of their first two tournaments this year, with Mountain West foes Air Force and Utah State as two of those nine.
 
The first 36 holes of the 2017 Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational will be played on Monday, Sept. 25, with a shotgun start scheduled for 8:15 a.m. MT. Tuesday's 18-hole final will utilize a staggered shotgun format, with the top four teams playing in five tee times from hole No. 1 beginning at 7:55 a.m. MT while the rest of the field will play with a shotgun start at 8:15 a.m. MT.
