LARAMIE, Wyo. (Aug. 19, 2017) -- On its home court in the UniWyo Sports Complex, the Wyoming volleyball team squared off in the Brown and Gold scrimmage on Saturday night. The Brown squad won 3-0 (25-18, 26-24, 25-22) over the Gold squad led by
Halie McArdle's 13 kills and
Marissa Harmon's 31 assists.
"We wanted to have back-to-back nights of competition as a way to stimulate what a tournament weekend is like," Cowgirl head coach
Chad Callihan said. "We had training this morning so hopefully it helped make it feel like we were playing three times. Our defense tonight improved a lot from last night. We were a little loose last night defensively, but I thought our blocking tonight looked much better. Marissa (Harmon) has definitely shown some very nice things for us. I thought that Madi (Fields) and Lily (Austin) looked great last night and did well again tonight, and Emily (Lewis) has shown much improvement. It will be nice to get a little rest and recover as we look into the first week."
McArdle, a sophomore from Gretna, Neb., recorded eight digs and five total blocks in addition to her team-high kills. Junior
Reed Copeland had 11 kills during the scrimmage, as senior's
Lily Austin and
Shelby Johnson had 13 and 12 digs, respectively, for the Brown team. Harmon was one of two Cowgirls to tally a double-double on Saturday night. In addition to her 31 assists, she recorded ten digs.
For the Gold team, senior
Emily Lewis and sophomore
Tara Traphagan led the way offensively, Lewis posted 14 kills, while Traphagan had 13. Traphagan joined Harmon with a double-double as she recorded 11 digs during the match. Redshirt sophomore
Cori Aafedt tossed out a scrimmage-best 33 assists, while sophomore
Madi Fields led the squad with 17 digs. Aafedt was also third on the Gold team with eight digs. Freshman
Kaytlen Freeland had a solid night for the Gold team. She posted six kills with five digs during the three-set match.
The Cowgirls will be back in the UniWyo Sports Complex next weekend to start the season with the Rumble in the Rockies tournament. UW welcomes Abilene Christian, Portland and South Dakota on Aug. 25-26.
