AUSTIN, Texas – Sophomores
Jerayah Davis and
Bryce Ailshie advanced to the quarterfinals of the women's 100 meters and men's 800 meters, respectively, to highlight Thursday's action for the Pokes at the NCAA West Preliminary Round in Austin, Texas. Davis clocked a school record time of 11.41 in the women's 100 meters, tying the No. 24 time in the first round of the event at the regional meet hosted by the University of Texas at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
"Jerayah (Davis) got in there and was competing with some of the best sprinters in the country," head coach
Bryan Berryhill said Thursday night. "She had an amazing start to her race today and carried that through to a school record. She was confident."
Davis' time bested her own program record for the 100 meters by one hundredth of a second. She will compete in the quarterfinals of the event on Friday at 5 p.m. MT before competing in the first round of the 200 meters about 90 minutes later.
Meanwhile, Ailshie clocked a time of 1:51.13 in the men's 800 meters on Thursday to finish as the No. 20 competitor in the first round of the event. He will run against regional foes once again in Friday's quarterfinal, suiting up at 5:45 p.m. in an attempt to qualify for the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
"Bryce went out there and competed well," Berryhill said. "I thought he went out there and ran a smart race, and he earned himself another shot to get out there and see what he can do tomorrow."
Wyoming's other entrant in the men's 800 meters,
Ricky Faure, finished No. 32 in the first round of the event with a time of 1:51.97. In the women's 800 meters,
Kerry White (2:10.49) and
Cassidy Meade (2:13.12) finished 32nd and 44th, respectively, in the first round of competition.
In field event action on Thursday,
Emelda Malm-Annan took 24th place in the women's hammer throw with a toss of 191-11 while
Damon Unland took 39th in the men's hammer throw at 191-7.
Senior
Megan Brunette was the final competitor of the day for Wyoming, taking 38th in the women's 10,000 meters with a raw time of 37:43.41.
Along with Davis and Ailshie, seniors
Audra DeStefano and
Jordan Charles will also compete Friday on the second day of the three-day meet in Austin. Charles will compete at 4 p.m. MT in the first round of the men's 110-meter hurdles, while DeStefano will suit up at 7:20 p.m. for the quarterfinal round of the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase.
