BOULDER, Colo. – Sophomore thrower
Emelda Malm-Annan and junior thrower
Damon Unland unloaded huge tosses in the hammer throw on Friday in Boulder, Colo., providing a strong start for the University of Wyoming track & field team at the CU Invite.
Malm-Annan recorded a new personal best with a throw of 194 feet, 1.5 inches to take fourth place in the women's hammer throw, moving up to No. 5 on the UW all-time list for the event in the process. Malm-Annan competed against a stacked field of competition in which four other throwers surpassed the 190-foot mark.
Kayla York recorded a mark of 161-3.75, finishing 12th overall.
"Emelda (Malm-Annan) competed very hard in a very elite field with a big PR for the third meet in a row," said UW throws coach Paul Barrett.
Unland won the men's hammer throw with a personal best toss of 194 feet, 11.75 inches. After redshirting the 2016 outdoor season, Unland has started his 2017 outdoor campaign with a bang, winning three hammer throw competitions in a row. He was the only thrower to eclipse the 190-foot mark on Friday, winning the event by over five feet.
"Damon (Unland) had a nice PR and his third win in a row, even as we are still working out some early-season technical kinks," Barrett said.
Wyoming freshman
Hap Frketich continued his success in the men's javelin throw, tossing 178-2.75 to take second place on Friday.
The CU Invite will continue from Potts Field on Saturday, with a variety of field events as well as the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase slated for 11 a.m. MT to begin the day. Fans can follow live results at the link above.
