LOGAN, Utah – Competing on their second consecutive day after a successful day at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate in Long Beach, Calif., on Thursday, the University of Wyoming throwers met a different climate in Logan, Utah on Friday at the Mark Faldmo Invitational. Battling the cold, the Pokes recorded a number of solid marks on the first day of the two-day meet at the site of the 2017 Mountain West Outdoor Track & Field Championships, highlighted by
Emelda Malm-Annan's win in the women's hammer throw.
Malm-Annan topped the field with a toss of 188 feet, 9 inches, winning by over six feet and continuing her remarkably consistent 2017 outdoor season.
Kayla York finished eighth in the event, posting a mark of 161-6.
Junior
Damon Unland took third place in the men's hammer throw for the second straight day, tossing 182-8. Freshman
Hap Frketich took eighth place, throwing 156-5. Frketich also competed in the men's javelin throw on Friday, taking third place with a toss of 174-10.
"I thought we got some good reps in today after a quick turnaround with travel and a pretty cold day today," UW throws coach Paul Barrett said Friday night. "The main objective going into this competition was to get in the rings we will compete at for the conference championships, to get a feel for the facility."
Meanwhile, senior
Audra DeStefano ran a season-best time in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Mt. SAC Relays. DeStefano crossed the finish line in 10:21.53, taking 19th place in the elite section of the event.
The University of Wyoming track & field team will wrap up its busy weekend with the second day of the Mark Faldmo Invitational on Saturday. Field events start at 10 a.m. MT, while track events will begin at 11:45 a.m. MT.
