ST. GEORGE, Utah (March 16, 2017) – Junior
Gabrielle Gibson opened the Southern Utah Lady Thunderbird Invitational with an outstanding first-round score of 71 (-1) on Thursday afternoon. Gibson is tied for sixth place with one final round remaining. As a team, Wyoming sits seventh in the 12-team field with an opening round 305 (+17).
"Overall, we had a hard time adjusting to the green's speed from the last event, otherwise our ball striking was good," UW head coach
Josey Stender said. "Gabrielle (Gibson) played great again today even after a few hiccups. With it being only 36 holes, they know it will be a sprint to the end and we have to capitalize on all scoring opportunities."
Senior
Mackenzie Barrie owns a share of 27th place halfway through the tournament. Barrie shot a 77 (+5) on Thursday, while sophomore
Megan Knadler is one shot behind with a 78 (+6). Junior
Klara Castillo shot a 79 (+7) at the Sunbrook Golf Course to sit tied for 35th, as freshman
Erin Sargent closed out the first day in St. George with an 80 (+8) to claim a share of 40th.
South Dakota State holds the team lead with the final round left. SDSU shot a 282 (-6) on Thursday, while Gonzaga is in second with a 292 (+4). SDSU's Megan Mingo is the individual leader after Thursday's round. Mingo fired a 68 (-4) to lead the 68 total golfers.
UW will close out the tournament tomorrow morning with the final 18 holes. Similar to this afternoon, there will be no live scoring for tomorrow.
