Cowgirls Play 36 Holes to Open Entrada Classic

ST. GEORGE, Utah (March 13, 2017) – The Cowgirl golf team kicked off the BYU at Entrada Classic on Monday. Wyoming finished the first day of competition in fifth place out of the 12 teams at the Entrada at Snow Canyon Country Club in St. George, Utah. 

"I'm pleased with today's consistent performance on a very tough golf course," Cowgirl head coach Josey Stender said. "The girls played aggressive but smart and maintained mentally tough during the long first day."

When the first round was complete, UW was in fourth place with an opening round score of 303 (+15). Wyoming then closed out the first day with a total mark of 607 (+31) to tie for fifth place. Kent State, the No. 12 team in the country, led the way after each round and is currently sitting alone at the top with a score of 525 (-1). 

After the first round, freshman Erin Sargent came back into the clubhouse with UW's lowest round of 74 (+2). Sargent's hot start proved to be one shot off her career-best round. Junior Gabrielle Gibson and sophomore Megan Knadler were close behind Sargent with a 76 (+4) during the early round of the day. 

Junior Klara Castillo posted a first round 77 (+5), while senior Mackenzie Barrie shot an 81 (+9) on Monday morning. Barrie bounced back with UW's best round in the afternoon, scoring a 75 (+3) during the second round, as Castillo recorded a 79 (+7). 

Sargent shot a 76 (+4) as Gibson scored a 77 (+5) during the second round. Additionally, Knadler also fired a 76 (+4) on Monday afternoon. With one round remaining, Sargent leads the Brown and Gold as she is tied for 16th with a two-round total 150 (+6). Knadler is only one shot behind and owns a share of 26th, as Gibson, tied for 30th, totaled a 153 (+9) entering Tuesday's final round. To round out the UW lineup, Barrie and Castillo are tied for 39th with a two-round score of 156 (+12).

"If we stick to our game plan during tomorrow's round, we will have a good finish to this tournament," Stender added.

Knadler opened the day with a team-best four birdies in the first round. Gibson recorded three during round two. Knadler and Sargent each have five after completing the opening day in St. George.
