Corpus Christi, Texas (Feb. 27, 2017) –– The University of Wyoming women's golf team is in fifth place in a field of 12 teams following the first two rounds of the Islander Classic on Monday. The Cowgirls posted scores of 308 (+20) and 304 (+16) on first 36 holes at the Corpus Christi Country Club for a first-day total of 612 (+36).
"I thought that today was a good and new experience for us," Cowgirl head coach
Josey Stender said. "It was a challenge to play on a course that had different conditions than what we've seen all year. Gabrielle (Gibson) was steady and confident all day. It was great to see her roll the ball so consistently after making a few adjustments from the last event. We know we are just a few strokes away from where we can have a solid finish tomorrow."
Junior
Gabrielle Gibson led the Brown and Gold during both rounds on Monday and paced UW with a two-round total of 148 (+4). She is right in the thick of things and tied for seventh heading into the final round of play. Gibson's two rounds were highlighted by 23 holes at par and five birdies.
Freshman
Erin Sargent capped off the day with a 75 (+3) after an opening round 78 (+6). She also recorded five birdies on the day and jumped 13 spots during the second round. Sargent is tied for 17th with a 153 (+9). Sophomore
Megan Knadler completed the day with her best round of 76 (+4). She owns a share of 30th place with a 154 (+10). Senior
Mackenzie Barrie is just outside the top-30 with a two-round total of 157 (+13). Barrie posted rounds of 78 (+6) and 79 (+7) on Monday.
Playing as an individual for the Brown and Gold,
Sarah Hankins posted rounds of 78 (+6) and 80 (+8) on Monday. She is tied for 36th with the final round remaining. To round out the Cowgirls,
Klara Castillo shot an 80 (+8) and 81 (+9) for a two-round mark of 161 (+17).
