HOUSTON, Texas – Cowboy swimming and diving is in first place after
the first day of competition at the Western Athletic Conference Championships,
hosted in Houston, Texas, at the UH CRWC Natatorium. Wyoming ended the day with
114 points, just ahead of Air Force with 111 points and Grand Canyon with 100
points.
Wyoming opened up the meet with a
third-place finish in the 200 medley relay, clocking in at 1:27.25. The team of
junior Wade Nelson, senior Gabe Rooker, junior Kyle White and sophomore Liam Metzsch tabbed the fastest time of the season for Wyoming, just one
one-hundredth of a second shy of the school record.
The Cowboys tallied crucial points
in the 1-meter diving event, finishing first, second and fourth. After scoring
the second, third and fourth best marks in the preliminary round, Wyoming's
divers stepped up in the finals. Freshman Scotia Mullin recorded a career-best
311.60 to claim the top spot. Senior Jacob Rehmeier notched second place with a
season-high score of 290.60. Redshirt-sophomore Ryan Russi placed fourth with a
season-best mark of his own of 286.40.
"We had a solid first night," UW head coach
Tom Johnson said. "We got off to a fast start in the first relay, coming close
to the school record. Scotia found a way to win the 1-meter and was just
outstanding. The first battle is in the books, six more to go. We'll try to be
awesome tomorrow and see if we can put a session together that gives us an
opportunity to hang with Air Force. We're looking forward to three more great
days of swimming and diving."
Wyoming closed out the first day of
competition finishing third in the 800 freestyle relay with a time of 6:36.69.
Junior Jacob Porter, freshman Seth Borgert, junior Slade Sheaffer and sophomore Jack Herron touched the wall over three seconds faster than Wyoming's previous
best time of the season.
The Cowboys will return to the pool tomorrow
morning at 9:30 a.m. MT for preliminary heats, with the finals set to begin at
5 p.m. MT.
