COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Cowgirl swimming and
diving concluded the Mountain West Championships with a fourth-place finish on
Saturday night at the Texas A&M Natatorium in College Station, Texas.
Junior Maria Harutjunjan followed up last night's record-setting performance in the 100
breaststroke with a victory in the 200 breaststroke tonight. After placing
second in the event each of the last two years, Harutjunjan finally broke
through with a winning time of 2:11.53. Her mark was a career best and
second-fastest in school history. Junior Kelly Sheldon put her name in the
record books with a time of 1:55.76 in the 200 backstroke, shattering the
school record by nearly half of a second. Her time was enough for second place.
The Cowgirls closed out
the conference championship strong in the final two events. First, freshman Karla Contreras and senior Keely Bishop finished second and third,
respectively, on the platform. Contreras broke her own Wyoming record with a
mark of 281.55. Bishop set a new career-high score of 253.50, moving up to
second in the all-time Cowgirl rankings behind Contreras. In the night's final
event, Wyoming's 400 freestyle relay team recorded a season-best time to place
fourth. The group, consisting of sophomore Isobel Ryan, senior Danielle Badger,
senior Abby Sullivan and sophomore Samantha Burke clocked a time of 3:21.72.
Wyoming wrapped up
the weekend with 1,004 points and a fourth-place finish. Boise State claimed
the conference title with 1,390 points, followed by San Diego State with 1,139
points. Nevada placed third with 1,089.50 points. Colorado State took fifth
with 791 points and New Mexico sixth with 697 points. Fresno State (524 pts.),
UNLV (520 pts.), Sano Jose State (496.50) and Air Force (479) round out the final
standings.
