BOULDER, Colo. – The University of Wyoming track & field team got off to a good start at the Potts Invitational on Friday, taking home victories in three field events on the first day of the two-day meet at Colorado's brand new indoor track facility. Senior
Scott Carter emerged victorious in the men's long jump, leaping 23 feet, 7.5 inches, while Wyoming swept the men's and women's weight throw competitions thanks to solid performances from sophomore
Emelda Malm-Annan and freshman
Kirk Unland.
"Scott is a great triple jumper, but he can come back and get great marks in the hurdles and the long jump for us," Wyoming head coach
Bryan Berryhill said Friday night. "He's an extremely versatile athlete."
Unland threw 59-1.25 to earn the victory in the men's weight throw, his second straight win in the event to begin his collegiate career. Fellow freshman
Hap Frketich threw 56-6.25 for fourth place, while
Garrett Lynch tossed 51-3.25 for ninth.
"Kirk's off to a great start," said Berryhill. "To be able to win at home is one thing because you're comfortable there, but to be able to go on the road and get a victory in an uncomfortable setting says a lot about who he is as a competitor."
Malm-Annan posted a mark of 59-4.5 to win the women's weight throw competition, while teammates
Kayla York and
Hannah Carr finished sixth and seventh, respectively, with marks of 52-11 and 51-6.75. "Coach [Paul] Barrett and Emelda have been working on getting her technique down, and I think it's really starting to come along," Berryhill said of the 2016 Mountain West women's weight throw champion.
Pollock placed sixth in the men's high jump, leaping 6-4.25, while fellow freshman
Anissa Warner took sixth in the women's high jump with a mark of 5 feet, 5.25 inches.
Sofia Hof finished eighth in the women's competition, jumping 5-3.25.
Sophomore
Allegra Carson posted a sixth-place finish in the women's long jump, leaping 17-4.
Wyoming will continue competing at the Potts Invitational on Saturday, starting at 10 a.m. MT with the men's shot put and women's triple jump.
