The University of Wyoming Cowboy swimming and diving team kicked off competition at the 2016 WAC Championships in Houston, Texas on Wednesday. The four-day event is being held at the University of Houston's Campus and Recreation Wellness Natatorium. After the first day of events, UW is in third place with 87 points.

"We have a lot of swimming left to do," UW head coach Tom Johnson said. "I felt good about our 200 medley relay. Obviously, setting a school record is a great accomplishment. We may have been a little cautious after what happened to our girls last week, but nonetheless we still had a solid swim in the 800 free relay."

Wyoming opened the night by setting a school record and claiming fourth in the 200 medley relay. A quartet of Wade Nelson, Gabe Rooker, George Eglesfield and Bryce Carter touched the pads in a time of 1:27.24. In the 800 free relay, a team of Slade Sheaffer, Jack Herron, Ryan Nelson and Ryan Ball marked a time of 6:30.88 to finish in third for the Pokes. It was also the third-fastest time in UW history.

"I was pretty impressed with how a few of our guys raced today and I believe it bodes well for them tomorrow," Johnson added.

Sophomore Austin Rettinghouse advanced to the 3-meter final event at the championships. Rettinghouse recorded a score of 314.95 and finished in third place to lead the Pokes. He was the lone Cowboy in the final after posting a score of 292.15 in the preliminary round this morning. Jacob Rehmeier placed first in the consolation final and ninth overall, after he took ninth in the prelims. Rehmeier posted a score of 296.50 in the consolation final.

The WAC Championships will continue tomorrow as the Cowboys will take part in the 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free and 200 free relay. The divers will compete in the 1-meter event. Prelims are set to begin at 9:30 a.m., MT, as finals will follow at 5 p.m.
