In another stellar performance, the University of Wyoming swimming and diving teams split a dual meet with PAC-12 foe Arizona State at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center in Tempe, Ariz. The Cowgirls came away with their first-ever win against a PAC-12 opponent 152-146, while the Pokes fell just short against the Sun Devils 152.5-145.5.

"We had a great dual today," UW head coach Tom Johnson said. "I am very proud of everyone for the determination and toughness they showed. We knew ASU was going to challenge us, and I believe there were a number of us that stepped up to the challenge and represented Wyoming very well."

To begin the meet, Wyoming was able to get off to a great start as a tandem of Emily Stevens, Maria Harutjunjan, Molly Coonce and Emily Ridout won the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:42.31. A charge of Austin Layman, Gabe Rooker, Kyle White and Bryce Carter took second in the 200 medley relay on the men's side.

Maria Harutjunjan won the 100 breast with a top mark of 1:03.38, as Emma Dow came in third. Gabe Rooker once again won the 100 breast for the Pokes. He swam a NCAA qualifying time of 54.52. In the very next event, Coonce won the 200 fly with a time of 2:03.96.

"At one point the guys were down by 16 points but they were able to fight back," Johnson added. "It was a little rough for a few events, but we had some student-athletes keep fighting and stand up to the challenge. I'm proud of the Cowgirls to be able to get a huge win for this program. Our divers did a great job of keeping us in the meet as well."

Ridout and Carter each dominated the 50 free events. Ridout had an NCAA qualifying and fourth-best time in Cowgirl history with a 22.86, while Carter also had the fourth-best time in Cowboy history with a 20.28.

"Bryce (Carter) had a tremendous time in the 50 free, as did Emily (Stevens)," Johnson said "It was great to see their hard work pay off the way it did."

Harutjunjan brought home a victory in the 200 breast. She had a time of 2:16.26 just before Rooker claimed victory in the 2:00.13. Liam Holt took third for the Pokes in the 200 breast with a mark of 2:03.19. Ryan Nelson was nothing but dominant in the 500 free for Wyoming. He swam away with the clear victory with a time of 4:33.61, while shortly after the Cowgirls went 1-2-3 in the 100 fly. Coonce (55.25), Samantha Burke (56.52) and Emily Stucky (58.11) took the top spots for Wyoming.

Dow claimed her first victory of the afternoon in the 400 IM. She had the top time of 4:28.04, while Ryan Nelson won the 400 IM for the Pokes. He had a final time of 3:57.11, as Ball (3:59.65) came in second and Wade Nelson (4:00.21) took third.

The Pokes were able to come away with a victory in the last event of the day. White, Kyle Scalise, Rooker and Carter won the 400 free relay with a time of 3:01.18.

Nicole Hlavacek and Ball each placed second in the 1000 yard freestyle for Wyoming. Hlavacek swam a 10.28.86, while Ball touched the pads at 9.29.44. Abby Sullivan had a final mark of 56.52 in the 100 back, while Wade Nelson was the top Cowboy in the 100 back on the men's side placing third with a time of 50.94.

"It was fun to come to Tempe and compete the way we did. There were a number of alumni that came out and supported us today, including Ann Vichy, who is a former coach. It was a great team effort today, from all of our coaches to the student-athletes."

Wyoming will next compete in Las Vegas on Jan. 30th. UW will take on UNLV and Nevada.
