The University of Wyoming swimming and diving teams completed the second day of the Purdue Invitational in West Lafayette, Ind., on Saturday afternoon. The final day of the invite will conclude tomorrow afternoon.

"We are in a good spot after these two days," UW head coach Tom Johnson said. "We know competition will be tough tomorrow so we want to finish strong but we showed tremendous effort by a number of swimmers today, and even a few looked the fastest they have been all season. I was very happy to see that. We will work on a few more things and hopefully do well again tomorrow. "

The Pokes are in second place with one day remaining. They are behind host Purdue with 438.5 points, while the Cowgirls remained in third place after the second day. They have 316 total points.

The Cowgirls were able to get the afternoon off to a good start in the first event of the finals session. A team of Emily Stevens, Maria Harutjunjan, Molly Coonce and Emily Ridout took third in the 200 medley relay with a final time of 1:40.56. It was just short of the best time in school history. The Cowboys also claimed third in the event on the men's side, as a tandem of George Eglesfield, Gabe Rooker, Kyle White and Bryce Carter swam a 1:29.53.

Ryan Nelson brought home his first victory of the Invitational by winning the 400 IM with a time of 3:52.59. Fellow Poke Ryan Ball took third in the event with a time of 3:53.28 and Wade Nelson finished sixth touching the pads at 3:55.92.

Coonce was the lone Cowgirl in the 100 fly this afternoon. She swam a 53.75 to finish third in the event for Wyoming. It was the second best time in school history. Eglesfield finished sixth in the 100 fly for the men. He had a final mark of 49.01. Slade Sheaffer took sixth in the 200 free for the Pokes. He had a final time of 1:39.55, while freshman Jack Herron ended up in 15th with a time of 1:41.97.

Harutjunjan took second place in the 100 breaststroke. She touched the pads with a final time of 1:01.39, as Ridout swam a 1:03.46 to take seventh in the event. Coonce was the third Cowgirl in the top-10 in the 100 breast. She finished with a time of 1:03.37. On the men's side, Rooker took second in the 100 breast with a time of 54.45. Kyle Scalise took sixth with 55.27. Both times were an NCAA "B" Cut mark.

Isobel Ryan and Stevens took fourth and eighth, respectively in the 100 back for the Cowgirls. Ryan came in at 55.35, as Stevens swam a 56.37. Ryan's time was the fifth-best for a Cowgirl in school history. Ball finished sixth on the men's side in the 100 back. He completed the event with a time of 49.98.

Austin Rettinghouse and Jacob Rehmeier finished in third and fourth place in the 3-meter diving event for the Pokes. Keely Bishop took seventh in the 1-meter diving event for Wyoming.

The final day of the Purdue Invitational will be held tomorrow afternoon. The top 32 swimmers in the prelims of each event will qualify for the evening finals. Those in the top 16 will account for team points in the A and B finals. The top eight divers in the prelims of the springboard events will advance to the finals. Relays are finals-only events in the evening sessions.
