Wyoming Wins 14 Events to Open Two-Day Meet in Flagstaff

The University of Wyoming swimming and diving teams set ten pool records in the Wall Aquatic Center during the first day of a two-day combined meet with Louisiana State and host Northern Arizona on Saturday. The Cowboys set eight pool records and are competing against LSU for the first time, while the Cowgirls are battling NAU in addition to facing the Tigers for the first time as well.

Kyle White set two pool-records to lead the Pokes against LSU. He won both 50 and 100 free with final times of 23.16 and 51.60, respectively. Ryan Nelson also posted new pool records on his way to two victories. He won the 400 free with a pace of 4:06.13 and the 200 IM with 2:07.55.

Freshman Isobel Ryan was the lone individual for the Cowgirls to set a pool-record. She won her first event as a Cowgirl in the 50 freestyle with a time of 25.25. The Cowgirls also set a pool record in the 200 freestyle relay. A team of Samantha Burke, Ryan, Sarae Dydo and Emily Ridout posted the top time.

Sophomore Ryan Ball continued a strong fall with a pool record time of 8:31.00 in the 800 freestyle. Senior Kyle White also set a pool record in the 100 freestyle. He posted a time of 51.60, while Bryce Carter finished third in the event with a pace of 52.36. Carter also finished second in the 50 free behind teammate White.

Emily Stevens had a solid first day in bringing home a victory for the Cowgirls in the 50 backstroke. She finished with a time of 29.08. Slade Shaeffer took home the top time in the 200 freestyle. He had a time of 1:53.89 for the Brown and Gold. Scalise claimed his second victory on the evening in the 50 breaststroke, as Ryan Nelson won the 200 butterfly with a mark of 2:03.86. Eric Oleson finished second in both the 400 and 800 free, while Molly Coonce and George Eglesfield each took home second place honors in the 50 butterfly.

The Pokes also claimed victories in two relays events on the afternoon. UW set pool-records in both the 200 free relay in addition to the 400 medley relay. A team of White, Carter, Metzsch and Scalise earned the win in the 200 relay, while Ball, Scalise, Eglesfield and Carter won the 400 medley relay.

Day two of the combined meet will continue tomorrow in the Wall Aquatic Center. Action will begin at 10 a.m. MT.
