Brown Squad Defeats Gold in Annual Dual

Brown & Gold Results

The Wyoming swimming and diving teams hosted its annual Brown and Gold Dual on Friday evening at South High School in Cheyenne. The Brown squad, led by senior captains Emily Stucky and Kyle Scalise, edged out the Gold squad 302.5-292.5.

Although the event began with the Gold team taking the women's 200 medley relay, the Brown squad went on to capture three of the next four events. Nicole Hlavacek swam away with the 1,000 freestyle with a final time of 10:38.46, as Stucky recorded a 1:56.84 in the 200 freestyle. The Brown squad's victorious 200 medley relay team was made up of Wade Nelson, Scalise, George Eglesfield and Kyle White and finished with a time of 1:32.32.

Sophomore Ryan Ball got his sophomore season off to a great start as he brought home the 200 freestyle with a final mark of 1:43.24. Slade Sheaffer finished in second place right behind Ball with a 1:43.26. Also for the Gold team, Abby Sullivan claimed the 100 yard backstroke title with a 57.19, while Wade Nelson took the men's 100 backstroke with a 52.09. Both men's and women's 100 breaststroke was won by the Gold squad. Molly Coonce and transfer Gabe Rooker won their heats with 1:05.84 and 56.33, respectively. Coonce (56.64) also took the top time in the 100 butterfly, as Eglesfield (50.91) claimed the top spot for the men.

Shannon Chelsvig of the Gold squad won the 200 butterfly (2:10.13), while Eglesfield (1:51.77) earned the top spot on the men's side. The Gold team's Emily Ridout (23.45) and Kyle White (21.26) of the Brown team won the 50 freestyle. They each also won the 100 freestyle, as Ridout clocked a 52.51 and White finished with 47.03.

Ball won his second event of the night in the 200 backstroke. He finished with a mark of 1:52.24 as Abby Sullivan won the event on the women's side. Rooker also claimed his second event in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:05.19, and Emma Dow earned herself a first place finish in the women's 200 breaststroke with a final 2:27.13. Hlavacek, of the Gold squad won the 500 freestyle, while Eric Oleson of the Brown squad won on the men's side.

The Gold squad won three of the four diving events on the night. Kari Campbell (277.12) won the 1-meter dive and Austin Rettinghouse of the Gold squad, won both the 1 and 3-meter dives on the men's side. Rettinghouse marked a 305.70 on the 1-meter and a 234 on the 3-meter. Keely Bishop took home the 3-meter dive for the Brown team with a mark of 205.5.

Both the Cowboys and Cowgirls will open the season next Friday at 12 p.m. MT at the DU Relays.
