HIGHLANDS RANCH,
COLO. (OCT. 7, 2016) – The University of Wyoming women's golf team is on
pace for its fourth top-ten finish of the fall season after the first day of
play at the Ron Moore Intercollegiate on Friday. The Cowgirls are currently in
tenth of the 18-team field with a 297 (+9), it's fourth best score of the year.
Friday's team score also tied the seventh-best mark in program history.
"I thought it was another solid round for the team today
amongst a stacked field," Cowgirl head coach Josey Stender said. "We adjusted
well to the course conditions, considering how drastic a difference it was from
the course we played earlier this week. Mackenzie (Barrie) did a great job
leading us. Her iron play and speed control were on point today."
After her first top-25 finish of the year at last weekend's
Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate, senior Mackenzie Barrie continued with yet another
strong outing. The British Columbia native paced UW during the first round on Friday
with an opening-round and career-low 70 (-2) and is in a tie for fourth place at
the Highlands Ranch Golf Club. She had 14 pars to go along with three birdies
to begin the tournament.
After the first 18 holes, junior Gabrielle Gibson joins
Barrie among the top-30 overall. Gibson shot a 74 (+2) to tie for 29th place. Gibson,
like Barrie, also had three birdies on Friday. Redshirt sophomore Sarah Hankins has a share of 52nd place after a first-round 76 (+4).
Freshman Erin Sargent is one shot behind Hankins, after she
posted a 77 (+5) on Friday. Junior Klara Castillo, playing as an individual, is
tied for 75th of the 102 golfers with a 78 (+6), while sophomore Megan Knadler recorded an 85
(+13) at the Highlands Ranch Golf Club.
Pepperdine holds the top team spot after the first 18 holes
with a team score of 280 (-8). Denver is nine shots back with a 289 (+1). Denver's
team score of 74.03 ranks 40th in the Golfstat statistical rankings that were released
on Sept. 26. Katrina Prendergast is the individual leader with two rounds remaining. She carded a 68 (-1), while Audrey Judd of Nebraska and Denver's
Sophie Newlove are one shot back and tied for second.
The second day of the Ron Moore Intercollegiate is set to
take place tomorrow morning. Live results can be found at the link above.
