Nick Costello will begin his fifth year as assistant coach in the 2024-25 season coaching cross country and distance.
After spending the 2018-19 season as a volunteer assistant coach, Costello was hired as a full-time assistant coach for cross country and track and field in the 2019-20 season.
In the 2024 season, Costello helped lead a team of Cowboys to the National Championship where they finished 30th in the nation. That season, one Cowgirl earned All-Mountain West First-Team honors while two Cowboys were named All-Mountain West Second-Team at the conference meet.
Costello helped guide Wyoming cross country teams to another successful season in 2019-20, as the Cowboys placed third, and the Cowgirls placed sixth at the Mountain West Championships. Harry Ewing, Christopher Henry and Paul Roberts each earned all-Mountain West honors at the meet. At the NCAA Mountain Region Championships, the Cowboys placed sixth and the Cowgirls finished 12th, as Henry earned all-region honors. Henry then represented the Cowboys at the NCAA National Championships, where he placed 136th and earned his second-consecutive NCAA Elite 90 award.
During the indoor track & field season, Roberts was named the Mountain West Championships Performer of the Meet, as he won the 3,000m race and finished runner-up in the 5,000m race. Henry was third in the 3,000m race, as well. During the season, Ewing and Michael Downey ran the second- and fourth-fastest 3,000m times in school history, respectively. Kacey Doner ran the fourth-fastest 3,000m time and the sixth-fastest 5,000m time in Cowgirl history.
As a volunteer assistant during the 2018-19 cross country and track & field seasons, Costello helped guide the Cowboys back to the NCAA Cross Country National Championships for the first time since 1986. Additionally, the Cowboys were ranked in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) national poll for the first time in program history and defeated numerous nationally ranked teams. The Cowboys were ranked as high as No. 13 in the nation before finishing 12th at the National Championships.
Paul Roberts was named the Mountain West Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Year after winning the individual crown at the MW Championships, while
Christopher Henry and
Harry Ewing earned all-conference honors. The trio of Roberts, Henry and Ewing were named All-Region, and Roberts went on to earn All-America honors at the national championships.
As the men's distance crew transitioned to track & field season, Dahlberg's athletes recorded 10 marks on various Wyoming all-time top-10 lists, including the indoor 3,000m school record set by Henry and the outdoor steeplechase school record set by Ewing. Both Henry and Ewing competed at the NCAA West Preliminary for the second-consecutive season. During the indoor season, Henry earned a pair of all-MW honors in the 3,000m and 5,000m distances, before earning an all-MW accolade in the outdoor 10,000m race.
Costello competed collegiately at Colorado State, graduating in 2018 with a degree in agricultural business. He had track personal bests of 8:52.36 in the 3,000m, 15:16.85 in the 5,000m and 31:12.55 in the 10,000m distance.
