TUCSON, Arizona (5/3/26) – The University of Wyoming men's golf team completed Day 1 of the Mountain West Conference Championships on Sunday. The Pokes are in contention, currently second at 275 (-13), in a tournament being played at Omni Tucson National Resort.
"I'm proud of the kids. They've worked hard, and they've had some good stretches over the last month or so," head coach
Joe Jensen said. "We've done some good things here thus far, we've applied some good principles, and we've had some good practices."
San Diego State leads the tournament at 273 (-15). San Jose State rounds out the top three at 277 (-11).
Brody Leid and
Brody Knowlton spearheaded Sunday's effort for Wyoming. They're both tied for second after a carding a first round 67 (-5), which positions them two shots back of the individual lead held by San Diego State's Tyler Kowack.
Leid enjoyed an unblemished Day 1. He rolled in five birdies to go alongside 13 pars.
Knowlton boasted one more birdie than his teammate but did suffer one bogey, as well. He had a very level round with a trio of birdies on both his front and back nine.
Kellen Ball shares 17th place after a Round 1 score of 70 (-2). He holed four birdies, three of which were on the front nine, his final nine holes of the day.
Conner Scheich is tied for 21st following a stellar conclusion to his opening round. He birdied his final two holes, giving him four birdies on the day, to get into the red and card a 71 (-1).
Kristof Panke recorded a Round 1 score of 76 (+4) and that gives him a share of 54th. He played better as the round went along, boasting a pair of birdies on his second nine.
"We are going to prepare tomorrow like we did today," Jensen said. "We are going to stay in our lane and take it one day at a time. Good players create consistency, and we are trying to create consistency."
The second round gets underway on Monday at 8 a.m. (MST).
