MIDLAND, Texas (10/9/26) – The University of Wyoming men's golf team is set to host the inaugural Tall City Classic at Midland Country Club this week. The tournament will run Monday and Tuesday in addition to a junior clinic on Saturday and a Wyoming Alumni Association gathering on Sunday.
"This has been three years in the making, and we are truly excited to bring Wyoming golf to the Permian Basin," head coach
Joe Jensen said. "We have a number of generous local sponsors. Coach Gasser has been integral in getting this project off the ground. It's an honor to host this inaugural event."
The junior clinic runs from 1-3 p.m. on Saturday at Midland Country Club. The alumni gathering will run from 3-5 p.m. on Sunday at the Judy Pavilion at the country club and is free to the public. The Wyoming men's basketball team will battle TCU at the Al G. Langford Chaparral Center at Midland College on Sunday, Oct. 17 at 1 p.m. That game is also free admission.
Speaking in relation to the golf tournament, the Cowboys are hoping for a little bit of a bounce back. They struggled at the Mark Simpson Colorado Invite a couple weeks ago and would like to return to the top-five form they exhibited at the Gene Miranda Falcon Invite.
"It's important that we play well," Jensen said. "I want our young team to embrace these expectations. It's a neat experience to be part of an inaugural event, and I think that's given the guys a lot of pride."
As mentioned, it has been a roller-coaster type season thus far for the Pokes. They didn't play their best in Fort Collins or Boulder but showcased their best self in Colorado Springs.
A big part of that was the play of
Brody Leid. He won the Falcon Invite – his first collegiate win. Leid has finished in the top 11 in five of his last six tournaments, dating back to last year. Six of his nine rounds this season have been at or under par.
The rest of the roster will look to follow Leid's lead. There have been glimpses of that, as
Brody Knowlton has a top 20 this season at the Falcon Invite, and
Kellen Ball led the squad at the Colorado Invite.
Following the Tall City Classic, the Pokes close out their fall schedule in Hawaii. They travel to the Ka'anapali Classic from Oct. 26-28.
