LARAMIE, Wyo.  (Feb. 20, 2025) – The Wyoming Cowboys in conjunction with the Mountain West Conference announced the 2025 football schedule on Thursday afternoon. The slate features contests with old time rivals along with regional foes and opens with a Thursday evening contest on the road.

The Cowboys will open the season with a Thursday evening contest at Akron on August 28. Fans will get the first glimpse of the renovations to War Memorial Stadium when the Cowboys open the home schedule against Northern Iowa on Saturday, September 6.

The Mountain West is coming off a 2024 season in which five teams played in bowl games, including Boise State earning the No. 3 seed into the quarterfinals of the College Football Playoff and participating in the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl. Boise State and UNLV both finished the season inside the national rankings, with the Broncos landing ninth in the final US LBM Coaches Poll and eighth in The Associated Press Top 25 and the Rebels finishing No. 24 and No. 23 in those polls, respectively. Boise State was No. 9 in the final CFP rankings and UNLV was No. 24.

The 2025 schedule will play out over 15 weeks, concluding with the Old Trapper Mountain West Football Championship Game on Friday, Dec. 5. The contest will feature the two teams with the highest Conference winning percentages. The team with the highest Conference winning percentage will host the championship game. Boise State and UNLV squared off in the title tilt for the second straight season in 2024, with the Broncos emerging victorious on their home turf.

With the 2025 MW schedule announced, the Conference's national television partners, CBS Sports and FOX Sports, will now initiate a selection procedure that will include shifting some games to non-Saturday dates. That will be followed by the identification of network outlets and kick times.

Cowboys Bring Back Veterans Along with Exciting Newcomers
Second-year head coach Jay Sawvel returns some key veterans on both sides of the ball with five All-Mountain West performers back. Sawvel also added 40 players during the signing period with 16 of those being transfers from all levels of college football.

The Cowboys return a solid foundation on offense, including quarterback Kaden Anderson, All-MW tight end John Michael Gyllenborg, with veteran running backs led by Harrison Waylee. Also back are wide receivers Jaylen Sargent, an Honorable Mention All-MW selection,  and Chris Durr Jr., along nine offensive linemen from the 2024 two-deep that includes Al-MW selection Jack Walsh.

Defensive ends Sabastian Harsh and Tyce Westland, nose tackle Ben Florentine, defensive tackle Jayden Williams, cornerback Keany Parks and nickel back Wrook Brown return for a solid defensive core. Brown and Harsh earned Honorable Mention All-MW honors a season ago. Sawvel brought in 10 transfers on the defensive side of the football to compete with talented returners that saw Wyoming lead the nation in third down defense last season.
